Greetings All, From iDigBio: You are invited to this year’s *Biodiversity Digitization Conference (BioDigiCon 2022)* <https://www.idigbio.org/content/biodigicon-2022>, an all-virtual event scheduled for *27-29 September 2022*. Registration is free through Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/2022-biodigicon-tickets-367104919697. Although the agenda is still in progress, this year’s conference will feature: * a session focused on data quality issues and solutions organized by leaders from the world’s major aggregators, including GBIF, iDigBio, ALA, and CRIA, * a 4-part series comparing and contrasting leading collections and data management systems (Arctos, Emu, Specify, and Symbiota) with time for your questions, and * several lightning rounds featuring digitization tools and techniques. Also included will be extended sessions on * image and data storage, * digitization workflows using Symbiota software, * issues related to the Digital Extended Specimen, * methods dealing with biocultural issues and the use of Traditional Knowledge (TK) labels, * an exploration of digitization sustainability strategies at the institutional level, * consideration of current collaborations between GBIF, ALA, and iDigBio for aligning pipelines benefiting data mobilization, and * reports from major digitization projects funded by the U.S National Science Foundation. *Lightning Talk Space is Limited: * We have issued an open call for 10-minute lightning round talks focused on novel or successful digitization techniques, data mobilization strategies, tools, protocols, workflows, and the like. They would be responsible for developing and maintaining open source research software, specifically an online management system for camera trap data. TDWG Audubon Core: current Open Comment Period

Dear all, Apologies if you have seen this announced elsewhere, but I am circulating wider for feedback as these proposed changes have potential implications for existing implementations, and the possibility of setting precedent beyond AudubonCore (see notes below). The Audubon Core Maintenance Group opened a public comment period for three term-change proposals on 15 January 2022. The comment period will continue until 15 February, or until consensus is reached on the proposal and there are no dissenting comments for 30 days. To view and comment on the proposals, visit https://github.com/tdwg/ac/milestone/5 and comment on the respective issues. NOTES One of the proposals (https://github.com/tdwg/ac/issues/220) has technical implications that could set a precedent beyond Audubon Core (proposes using the W3C standard, "Semantic Annotation of Web Services Description Language and XML Schema," to document relationships between terms in different schemas). Another (https://github.com/tdwg/ac/issues/195) has potential implications for stability of existing implementations that use ac:subjectPart and ac:subjectOrientation. Update: Diversifying the GBIF Model

Dear all, (Sent to GBIF Nodes interest group and TDWG content. Apologies if you receive this more than once) I am happy to share an update on progress as we start to explore enriching the data model for GBIF. This relates to the work introduced at the 2021 global nodes meeting and at the GBIF Governing Board Meeting 28, which were recorded [1,2]. As described in the videos we have focused initially on exploring case studies relating to data publishing and particularly on cases posing a challenge today when shaping data to the existing GBIF structure. This case study driven approach has allowed us to develop a process that we feel can be used to explore additional cases. We will introduce this work in a series of webinars starting in late January 2022, but we invite you to view the following resources to get a sense of the work underway. As the model matures, we will explore new catalogues and services that integrate and build on aggregated datasets. We also fully acknowledge that this is only the start of a long process, and would like to offer assurance that existing models and current publishing approaches will still continue to function. We welcome any initial feedback directly by email, including interest to review and improve the existing cases, and will provide clearer guidelines for providing feedback on the webinars. Public comment open for Regions of Interest proposals for Audubon Core

The Audubon Core Maintenance Group seeks public comment on a set of proposed term additions and changes designed to enable the designation of Regions of Interest (ROIs) within media items. These regions are defined using dimensions of space, time, and frequency and enable users to refer to particular parts of the media resource that are associated with occurrences of individual organisms. This proposal has been developed by the Maintenance Group through a series of meetings over the past year that examined existing approaches and solicited input from the community. The Maintenance Group now considers the proposal mature enough to move into the public review phase as described in section 3.3 of the Vocabulary Maintenance Specification (http://rs.tdwg.org/vms/doc/specification/#33-changes-to-vocabulary-terms) To see the proposed changes, view the four issues at https://github.com/tdwg/ac/milestone/4. The preferred method for commenting is to add a comment to a particular issue in the GitHub tracker. If you have problems using the GitHub system, you can also email comments to the convener at steve.baskauf(a)vanderbilt.edu<mailto:steve.baskauf@vanderbilt.edu> and he will paste them into the tracker. If you would like to indicate support, you can state it in a comment or use the “thumbs up” reaction. The public comment period will commence on 23 June 2021 and will end on 23 July or 30 days after consensus is reached.
