Meeting in Brazil

Dear colleagues, I look forward seeing many of you in Brazil. I am very happy that more people can attend now than we initially expected. We will meet at the reception of the Vitoria hotel on Monday 14, at 9:30. The meeting room will be in the hotel. If you arrive later, the hotel staff should be able to point you to the room. You can drop into the meeting at any time you desire [you just won't get out again :-)]. The agenda is open for your contributions! If you have specific points you can mail me until Friday afternoon GMT. My own priorities which I believe we absolutely need to finish would be to clarify the use of data types, esp. categorical, numerical, and textual information, esp. in comparison with DELTA vs. xml, and to clarify and finalize the definitions of special character states (unknown, unchecked, not applicable, variable, etc.). I believe after this the definition from Australia will already start to become usable. Meeting in Brazil

Dear SDD participants, The group has been dormant for a while. The minutes of the meeting in Canberra and Sydney were prepared already a while ago, but had asked several participants to check them, since we made substantial progress there. This took some time, and then I did not manage to get back to SDD from my own work on the GLOPP project. Anyway, the SDD pages: http://160.45.63.11/Projects/TDWG-SDD/index.html are updated, and - contain the minutes (rather long "minutes") - the xml example document and - xml-schema elaborated in March, and - Information on the upcoming TDWG meeting in Brazil. I realize that participation may be difficult for some interested, but I do hope many can come. We have decided to split the time into 2 days for more theoretical basical discussions (14/15) and two days for practical work on the schema (16/17) with input from those involved in development. Please send me any corrections regarding the minutes and I will update them! Meeting March, Sydney and Canberra

Dear colleagues, the dates of the meeting have now been fixed! We tried to involve as many people as possible, which meant splitting the meeting between Sydney and Canberra. We will meet: March 11-12: Premeeting in Canberra, probably at the Botanical Garden. The meeting will start March 11th at 9:30 am and last for 2 full days. We plan an intensive working session to elaborate an xml- schema draft. It will be a small, but open working session. List of confirmed participants: J. Croft (probably), G. Hagedorn, B. Morris, K. Thiele, Greg Whitbread, E. Zurcher. March 13-14: SDD meeting in Sydney at the Botanical Garden. The meeting will start March 13th at 1 pm in the afternoon Please send direct email to g.hagedorn(a)bba.de if you plan to attend either meeting. This will help our friends who organize the rooms to plan the right size of room for us. I am also collecting any specific contributions or points you want to make for an agenda. Dear friends, the situation is slightly confusing for me, because I do not know who may attend. I think what has evolved so far is that: A small meeting will be 11-12/11-13 in Canberra. Everybody is welcome who can make it, but so far only I, Bob, and Kevin are certain to attend. We will then move to Sydney to the Catalogue of Life/Bioforum II on March 15/16th. I would like to have another meeting there, in the hope that we can attract more people there. This could be either on 14th immediately before the meeting or 17th (which is Sunday) or after. What I need to know is who would attend to this meeting? I have information from Stan Blum and Liz Kolster, who are considering to come. Anybody else thinking about it? Dear colleagues, A new option arose and I want to open the discussion again: Several people who may attend prefer Canberra. Who could meet in Canberra 19-22, rather than 12-14 Sydney. I could probably handle this just as well, and so can Bob Morris (I think...). Meeting Sydney, Australia, March 12-14

Dear colleagues, I propose that those of the SDD workgroup who are able to participate will meet in Sydney, 12-14 March. If anybody can only come 13-14, she or he is welcome to do so. It will be a small group, but I hope we can do much hard work. We will attempt to finish a draft of an xml schema in a exiting working session. Everybody who cannot participate will be informed about the preliminary results, so that no final decisions will be made until the next TDWG meeting in autumn 2002 (I still do not know where it will be), where I hope more people will be able to attend. Those who are planning to come please send a confirmation mail to G.Hagedorn(a)bba.de. I have asked Karen Wilson to provide us with a small room with an internet connection, many thanks to her!
