The interest in semantics has been strengthened by the growing dependence on the Web and the continuously increasing importance of large-scale data sharing, integration, and reuse. Semantics is an inherently multi-disciplinary field that attracts engagement from a broad range of researchers and practitioners. Participants at the US2TS come from disciplines in computer science and engineering, natural sciences, geoscience, biology, library science, biomedical and health care sciences, social sciences and the humanities, and many others. Discussions at the symposium cover core topics such as the Semantic Web, Ontologies, Knowledge Graph, Linked Data and AI on the Web, Privacy and Trust, etc., as well as the intersection of such topics with areas such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and Blockchains. US2TS 2020 organizational committee invites your contributions and participation in the 2020 edition of US2TS to be held on 9 – 11 March 2020, in Raleigh, North Carolina. At this time, we are seeking two kinds of contributions (calls for other kinds of contributions will follow shortly). ===================================== ** Call for Sessions Proposals ===================================== We solicit anyone with an interest in the Semantic Web to propose a session for US2TS 2020. A session is any relevant activity that can fit into a 90 minutes slot (you can also propose a session that takes more than one slot). Examples of sessions are: - a panel discussion - a series of presentations on a topic - breakout-style discussions on a proposed topic - a tutorial As the main goal of the Symposium is to foster synergies and collaborations from different fields, we recommend that: 1. At least 2-3 people, preferably from different institutions, propose the session. This is not a strict requirement, mostly a recommendation (if you have a good case for a different setting we will definitely take your proposal into account). 2. All the session leaders are asked to confirm and commit to participate at the time of submission. 3. If your proposal already names speakers or panelists, you must state whether their participation is already confirmed. We encourage session proposals about cross-discipline topics which are of concern for participants from existing sub-communities ** Submission Guidelines -------------------------------------------------------------- Please prepare a (max) 2 page submission indicating: - Name of the session - Topic: please indicate which cross-discipline topics the session will tackle. Hi Steve, Wouldn't a basic (and much needed) use case simply be discovery? It's great to have this metadata (as Morphbank showed/shows) for being able to find images that have certain features / attributes in common. Say, I'd like to use AI to compare wing venation, or AI to compare variation in head shape for a particular group. Being able to search by subjectPart and subjectOrientation allows me to find images of interest much more efficiently. One bit that strikes me is that to do this we also need to know what taxonomic group the images are from. Hopefully, this is shared either in AC, or in the accompanying DwC Occurrence file in the higher classification fields... Deb PS Shall I add this use case to your list using your form? Or do you feel it's sufficiently covered in what you have already? I would add that we (at iDigBio) often get very little media metadata -- it makes discovery of relevant objects extremely difficult. Borrowed terms policy of Audubon Core

As part of ongoing efforts to clean up and clarify the Audubon Core (AC) documentation, the AC Maintenance Group has established a policy on versioning of terms in AC that are borrowed from other vocabularies. In a nutshell, AC will automatically adopt the newest versions of terms borrowed from other TDWG vocabularies such as Darwin Core. It will NOT automatically update to the newest versions of terms borrowed from vocabularies outside of TDWG, but rather the Maintenance Group will examine the effect of version changes on stability and interoperability before instituting a version change. The effect of the decision to institute this policy will be to remove the text "All geography terms from the Darwin Core version of 9 Dec 2009 are deemed included in the Core Layer. Specifically, this includes exactly those which are declared by Darwin Core to be in Darwin Core Class dwc:Location." from Section 7.5 of the AC Terms List document [2]. This is informative (non-normative) text and the Maintenance Group has determined that since the Darwin Core geography terms are now explicitly listed in the Term List document (vs. included by references as in the original Term List document), removal of the text will NOT have a negative effect on the community's understanding of what is included in the standard. Therefore, in accordance with Section 3.4.3 of the TDWG Vocabulary Maintenance Specification [3], the Maintenance Group is informing the community of this change rather than invoking the full change process described in the Maintenance Specification. The Maintenance Group plans to release a new version of the Audubon Core Standard when all of the changes associated with the cleanup are in place. That new version of the standard will include a new version of the Term List document with the change listed above as well as other changes to term metadata resulting from the resolution of other issues documented in the AC issues tracker [4]. In the new version of the Term List document, the Maintenance Group intends to add explicit version IRIs to the term metadata for terms where version IRIs exist. This will further reduce any confusion about what borrowed term versions are intended to be included in Audubon Core.
