Public comment open for Regions of Interest proposals for Audubon Core

The Audubon Core Maintenance Group seeks public comment on a set of proposed term additions and changes designed to enable the designation of Regions of Interest (ROIs) within media items. These regions are defined using dimensions of space, time, and frequency and enable users to refer to particular parts of the media resource that are associated with occurrences of individual organisms. This proposal has been developed by the Maintenance Group through a series of meetings over the past year that examined existing approaches and solicited input from the community. The Maintenance Group now considers the proposal mature enough to move into the public review phase as described in section 3.3 of the Vocabulary Maintenance Specification (http://rs.tdwg.org/vms/doc/specification/#33-changes-to-vocabulary-terms) To see the proposed changes, view the four issues at https://github.com/tdwg/ac/milestone/4. The preferred method for commenting is to add a comment to a particular issue in the GitHub tracker. If you have problems using the GitHub system, you can also email comments to the convener at steve.baskauf(a)vanderbilt.edu<mailto:steve.baskauf@vanderbilt.edu> and he will paste them into the tracker. If you would like to indicate support, you can state it in a comment or use the “thumbs up” reaction. The public comment period will commence on 23 June 2021 and will end on 23 July or 30 days after consensus is reached. Phase 2 will focus on capturing the infrastructure capabilities needed to support Digital Extended Specimens. Darwin Core Public Review status

Dear all, The initial 30-day Darwin Core review (with a one-day bonus) is now over. The Darwin Core Maintenance Group has reviewed the proposals that were under consideration and has considered that consensus has been achieved on 30 issues ( https://github.com/tdwg/dwc/labels/Process%20-%20prepare%20for%20Executive%…) which will now be progressed towards ratification. Ten issues remain controversial. Of these, six have been recommended to go to task groups for resolution (occurrenceStatus, occurrenceStatus controlled vocabulary, preparations, disposition, associatedSequences, biome). The other four contentious issues (individualCount, verbatimLabel, identificationQualifier, subgenus) will remain open under public review for another 30 days in pursuit of consensus so as not to lose any momentum. None of these ten issues will be included in the release resulting from this public review, which will proceed with the changes embodied in the aforementioned 30 resolved issues. Preparations are now under way for a release candidate to be presented to the TDWG Executive Committee for approval with the assistance of the Technical Architecture Group. Once presented, the Executive Committee has 30 days within which to decide to ratify all, part, or none of the proposed release. Cheers, John

The ARK Alliance succeeds the ARKs-in-the-Open initiative<http://arksintheopen.org/>, begun in 2018. All of them ● were introduced over 20 years ago, ● exist in large numbers (8.2 billion ARKs, 240 million DOIs, etc.), ● start with a string to identify the name assigning authority, ● require the active updating of URL redirects, and ● support research and scholarship, appearing in the Data Citation Index, Wikipedia, ORCiD.org profiles, etc. In contrast, ARKs are cheaper, more flexible, and less centralized, letting you ● create unlimited identifiers without paying for the right to do so, ● add any kind of metadata, including no metadata, ● append extensions and query strings during resolution, ● link directly to an article, image, or spreadsheet that is immediately usable by people and software without making them first stop at a landing page, and ● make millions of ARKs resolvable by managing just one ARK, via a mechanism called suffix passthrough. Who uses ARKs: End users, especially researchers, rely on ARKs for long term access to the global scientific and cultural record, where by design they identify anything digital, physical, or abstract. [image.png] Some things that have ARKs — an article, violin, genealogy, painting, book, sports photo, and plant specimen — assigned by the Louvre, Smithsonian Institution, Internet Archive, California Digital Library, and FamilySearch. Over 770 organizations are registered to create ARKs, including libraries, data centers, archives, museums, publishers, government agencies, and vendors.
