(While I am still working on the Paris minutes and related documents, I would like to raise a minor point:) What term should we use for the process of inferring and collecting information from multiple descriptions into a generated description? Bob raised the point that "collation" may be inappropriate or misleading. Consilience. The fact of ,jumping together, or agreeing; coincidence, concurrence; said of the accordance of two or more inductions drawn from different groups of phenomena. OED online I don't think this conveys that several concepts are being collated (which I don't like because it often implies a natural order). Rather it would seem to imply that several things mean or imply the same thing. However, the second meaning for 'collation' in the OED is "The action of bringing together and comparing; comparison.", which might in fact meet Gregor's needs. "Aggregate" when referring to moving shared characteristics up a level in the taxonomy. "Inherit" properties when going down the hierarchy. Does "inherit" carry too much baggage from genetics and programming? It might be good baggage to have. Hi, thanks everybody for the responses and help. I am only just back from a trip so I could not respond earlier. I agree that the: choice A_required_with_B_optional B_required /choice approach is working (albeit it makes the schema a bit difficult to read). The suggestions to put a minOccurs on the choice compositor containing optional elements is not working: having no element is fine for schema (at least with validator built into xmlspy). Also it could lead to an A-A sequence. James: Yes, having <Parent><A/><A/></Parent> is undesirable, it should really be a choice of two alternative expressions of a fact. Examples are where a definition may either be inline directly given free-form text or a URI pointing to another place, or both, but not neither. Two inline definition elements would be difficult to interpret (whats the difference between the two? Semantics of using one or multiple?...) In this example multiple URIs would in fact be allowable, but in other examples not). Pavel: You are right about additional validation in xslt. It is needed elsewhere already, but work on that has to come later. Hi all once more, if there is a problem of messy schema or complexity of this approach for developers, it is possible to add "processing" validation layer using Schematron or XSLT template - simply by adding the Schematron or XSLT code to xs:appinfo element of schema documentation. The application can parse schema, read code and execute it and report results of additional validation to user (or to some process). To catch such problems by Schematron or XSLT is deadly simple. And more, we can meet worse problems, where the XML schema is absolutely unusable - for example, dependence "if element A has value X, then value of element B must fall between Y and Z". In such case, Schematron and XSLT approach is only possible. Moreover, it is possible to include all such dependencies into one Schematron/XSLT code.
