Hi TAG, we had talked about proxying some of the rs.tdwg.org subversion site to different google code projects. I have setup 2 test proxies for darwin core and the new ontology project using these URLs: http://rs.tdwg.org/dwc2/terms/index.htm http://rs.tdwg.org/ontology2/ I wasnt sure if this solution was fully agreed on at TDWG, so I am seeking for advice. I very much like this solution, which gives us the advantage of having google code exposed via the tdwg.org domain. And it frees us from having to sync different copies. If there are no objections I would love to replace the /dwc and potentially also the /ontology part of rs.tdwg.org. But before making this switch some files on google seem to need adjustments in regards of absolute/relative links and html redirects. Markus

Darwin Core term management - dc:type, basisOfRecord, and recordClass

Dear TAG, On 23 October a solution to existing problems with the use of dwc:basisOfRecord and dcterms:type as published in the current Darwin Core standard was proposed. Discussions on tdwg-content leading up to and since that proposal support the addition of a term called recordClass as the pragmatic approach that requires less ongoing management than an alternative invoking a new type vocabulary. This message is to forge the way to the first Darwin Core term changes following the published Namespace Policy (http://rs.tdwg.org/dwc/terms/namespace/index.htm#classesofchanges) The proposed changes fall under two of the classes of changes, 3.3 (Semantic changes in Darwin Core terms) and 3.4 (Addition of Darwin Core terms declarations to existing Darwin Core namespaces). I propose to draft Decisions (see http://rs.tdwg.org/dwc/terms/history/decisions/index.htm) for review by the TAG following the 30-day prescribed review period (next week). I just wanted to send this introductory message in anticipation to open up the floor for any questions or commentary, as this is the first time this process has been invoked. John

Sorry for the spam, but the subjects of data copyright, data licensing, and public domain came up repeatedly in conversations I had at the TDWG conference. I know this isn't really a technical issue, but tdwg-tag is the only TDWG list I'm on (so far). I'm hoping some of you will circulate the following pointer to your colleagues working on data policy. I also thought I would also address this statement about the LSID-GUID meeting > The invitation to the LGTG workshop was open to everyone. "Thank you for your expression of interest in participating in the GBIF LSID-GUID Task Group. Due to the need to have a mix of skills/experience and to try to maintain a geographical spread (difficult), it did not prove possible to include you in the core group (North America was over-represented in the nominations)" I have no animosity toward GBIF for this, I have just become increasingly concerned about a growing paper trail that is amazingly similar to my own proposals but fails to mention my work. LSID-GUID Draft Document

I am concerned that someone will now look at my proposals and say "isn't this just a rehash of what was proposed in the TDWG LSID-GUID Document and at the 2009 TDWG meeting?" When in fact the opposite is true. There are parts of this draft that are simply reiterations of what I have proposed in several talks and online. For example " "The ambiguities inherent in taxon name usage are described elsewhere. For example, biodiversity researchers ask whether two specimens with different name strings are believed to be of the same taxonomic group. The availability of identifiers for name strings, published names and taxon concepts... http://about.geospecies.org/ This advantage is best illustrated by an example: One biologist may refer to a specimen of the Eastern Tree Hole Mosquito as *Ochlerotatus triseriatus*. Another may refer to that same species as *Aedes triseriatus*. They both agree they are talking about the same species concept; however, they are assigning different taxonomic hypotheses to that species concept. [image: Species Attribute Diagram] In addition the diagram of linked data basically mirrors what I have had in the GeoSpecies Knowledge Base for nearly a year. However, it fails to mention GeoSpecies at all.
