Webinar - Getty Vocabulary Program OpenRefine reconciliation service

[apologies for cross-posting] DCMI is pleased to announce the second in its new series of webinars! Richard Ward will give a tutorial on the Getty Vocabulary Program's new OpenRefine reconciliation service for aligning data records to ULAN, AAT, and TGN, including matching terms, cleaning data, and grabbing URIs from the Vocabularies' Linked Open Data. The first half of the presentation will be a general overview of how the service works and its benefits, and the second will focus on advanced techniques. Jonathan Ward is the Senior Editor of the Getty Vocabulary Program. He has over 20 years' experience working with thesaurus construction and terminologies for the arts and museum community. He has an MLIS from San José State University and is currently the Vice-Chair of CIDOC, ICOM's International Committee for Documentation. [apologies for cross-posting] DCMI is pleased to announce the first in a new series of webinars! Tiago Lubiana will talk about the Wikiproject COVID-19. This project is working to curate and organization information about COVID-19 on Wikidata and Wikipedia. The scale and pace of a global pandemic have highlighted issues around the consistent structuring of information, such as the scope of geographically-bound statements and the time period of outbreaks, along with challenges for quickly updating information on pages across multiple languages. The Wikiproject collaboration has created data models for relevant concepts, using ShEx entity schemas that can be validated via SPARQL queries. This webinar will introduce the Wikiproject and show examples of the data models at work. Tiago Lubiana is a PhD candidate in bioinformatics at the University of São Paulo and curator at Mee (an information startup in São Paulo). Mini workshop: Building Next-Generation Data Infrastructure for Plant Phenology Workshop overview What new software tools would you like to see for plant phenological data and research? Are there data resources you wish you could access or use but are not sure how (or that don’t even exist yet)? What frontiers in phenological research could new data and software support? Our team[1] has been developing methods and tools for integrating, mobilizing, and analyzing plant phenological data, such as the Plant Phenology Ontology <https://doi.org/10.3389/fpls.2018.00517> and a prototype data portal <https://plantphenology.org/> that integrates various in-situ and historical datasets from around the globe. We are also investigating methods for generating and integrating new phenological data from digital herbarium records and community scientists’ photographs from BudBurst <https://budburst.org/> and iNaturalist <https://www.inaturalist.org/>. Now, we would value your thoughts about 1) how to make plant phenological data more accessible and easier to use; 2) which high-value phenological datasets are still missing; 3) what kinds of analyses you wish you could do with phenological data; and 4) what barriers are limiting large-scale plant phenological research. We will be hosting a virtual, 90-minute, mini-workshop on Wednesday, June 17, from 3:00-4:30 PM Eastern Daylight Time (see in your local time <https://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/fixedtime.html?msg=Phenology+mini-wo…>), and we would love to hear what you think about these issues. Your feedback will help guide efforts to develop a next generation of phenological data and tools. We welcome participants from outside of North America, too, and we recognize that 3:00 PM in the eastern U.S. might not be a great time for researchers from other continents. Therefore, if we have sufficient international registrants, we will hold one or more additional workshops at alternative times to better accommodate work schedules in other parts of the world. Kind regards, Wouter Addink Dear Colleague We are writing on behalf of a COVID Task Force, a CETAF-DiSSCo joint action (CETAF = Consortium of European Taxonomic Facilities, https://cetaf.org/; DiSSCo = Distributed System of Scientific Collections, https://www.dissco.eu/). As a group of researchers working in different fields, we recently established a COVID Task Force, with the aim to help clarify the links between biodiversity, human pressure and the origin and causes of coronaviruses and similar disease spill-over, as well as to identify the actions that should be put in place to complement the efforts made in other disciplines. This effort is equally important to anticipate and prevent the occurrence and propagation of zoonotic infectious diseases worldwide. One of the first tangible actions we want to pursue is a horizon scanning exercise among stakeholders to identify priority questions that scientists should explore to reach a better understanding of pathogen origins, spill-over processes and their ecological correlates. The answers to these questions are needed to clarify the role that certain animal species play with respect to the pandemics such as the current one, and the environmental conditions that may facilitate these phenomena, from wildlife trade and consumption to habitat loss or degradation. We aim to publish, in the peer-reviewed literature, a list of questions that would form the basis to steer future research work. Given your expertise in the field, we would be most grateful if you could *supply questions that you see as priorities* for research funding. The form has space for up to twenty questions but feel free to send as many as deemed important. Many thanks in advance for your important contribution. Participation in the survey is on voluntary base and you are not obliged to answer all the questions. Your answers to the survey will be treated anonymously. The contribution of respondents will be acknowledged in the publication only if you leave your name. LifeCLEF is one of the labs of CLEF 2020 (https://clef2020.clef-initiative.eu/ <https://clef2020.clef-initiative.eu/>), which will be held in Thessaloniki Greece (22-25 September 2020). Motivation: Building accurate knowledge of the identity, the geographic distribution and the evolution of species is essential for a sustainable development of humanity, as well as for biodiversity conservation. However, the burden of the routine identification of plants and animals in the field is strongly penalizing the aggregation of new data and knowledge. Identifying and naming living plants or animals is actually almost impossible for the general public and often a difficult task for professionals and naturalists. Bridging this gap is a key challenge towards enabling effective biodiversity monitoring systems. The LifeCLEF evaluation campaign aims at boosting and evaluating the advances in this domain since 2011.
