DCMI 2023: Call for Participation November 6-10, Daegu, Korea DCMI 2023, the twenty-first International Conference on Dublin Core and Metadata Applications will be held as an in-person conference on November 6-10, in Daegu, South Korea. The organizers of DCMI 2023 seek inspirational submissions on innovative ideas, practices, and solutions that are built on theoretical models, empirical evidence, and ethical and just foundations of metadata. Submissions in the form of papers (full and short), posters, panels, tutorials, and student forums are welcome in the following broad categories of metadata design, deployment, and best practices: * Metadata principles, guidelines, and best practices * Curation, governance, resilience, and sustainability * Metadata quality and validation * Metadata analytics * Conceptual models and frameworks * Entity modeling and management * Metadata vocabularies * Interoperability and harmonization * Metadata automation, AI, and knowledge graphs * Lessons learned from research and implementation * Metadata and diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) * Metadata history and ethics * Metadata for operational and research data * Metadata in digital humanities, open science, and business communications * Metadata and government * Metadata and commerce SUBMISSION CATEGORIES The template for submissions will be published on the conference website shortly. FULL PAPERS Full papers either describe innovative work in detail or provide critical, well-referenced overviews of key developments or good practices. 8-10 pages, single-spaced, plus references SHORT PAPERS Short papers are narrower in scope than full papers and may be either a description of work in progress, or a project report that concisely describes a specific model, application, or activity. (4-5 pages, single-spaced, plus references) POSTERS Posters are for the presentation of projects, research under development, or late-breaking results. (2-page abstract, single-spaced, plus references) PANELS Panel sessions are organized by experts in a specific area of metadata. Each panel serves as a focused exchange regarding the latest research and/or best practice in the area. (1-2 page abstract with panelist bios of 100-150 words each) TUTORIALS Tutorials introduce specific topics of current interest in metadata practice, optionally including hands-on practice. (2-3 page proposal) STUDENT FORUM The DCMI Student Forum aims at providing an opportunity to master's and doctoral students to share their experiences and exchange ideas of best practices, research in progress, and findings in areas related to metadata innovation. \* Student forum will be in a hybrid format. In-person participation is encouraged with the option of virtual. (Less than 1500 words plus references) SUBMISSION DEADLINES * Papers (full and short): May 5th, 2023 * Posters, Panels, Tutorials, and Student forum: May 26th, 2023 NOTE * Peer-reviewed papers will be assigned DOIs and published online in the conference proceedings. The Tulane University Biodiversity Research Institute (TUBRI) is searching for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to involve in exciting, biology-guided, machine-learning research for two-years. The position is supported by a NSF Harnessing the Data Revolution Institute project entitled, Imageomics: A New Frontier of Biological Information Powered by Knowledge-Guided Machine Learning. This collaborative, multi-institution, multi-investigator project involves biologists and computer scientists who are training machine-learning algorithms to extract phenotypic trait data from images of a variety of types of biological specimens. The learning is aided by structured biological knowledge such as an anatomy ontology and phylogenetic trees. The postdoctoral researcher will contribute to ongoing efforts to extract trait data from images of fish specimens at the under the mentorship of Henry L. Bart Jr, Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and TUBRI Director, and Yasin Bakış, Senior Manager of Biodiversity Informatics and Data Engineering at TUBRI. The TUBRI postdoc will have opportunities to interact with other biologists, computer scientists, postdocs, and students from the ten other universities and research centers involved in the Imageomics Institute. TUBRI is a research center of Tulane's School of Science and Engineering, located on the grounds of the F. Edward Hebert Research Center in Belle Chasse, Louisiana, a suburb of New Orleans. TUBRI houses the Royal D. Suttkus Fish Collection and specializes in biodiversity discovery (primarily involving fishes) and biodiversity informatics research. The postdoctoral research associate will contribute to all aspects of ongoing work on the Imageomics Institute project at TUBRI, including: 1. Processing images of fish specimens and their supporting metadata to prepare them for machine-learning experiments; 2. Extracting data on morphological traits of fish specimens in images and determining the utility of the extracted data for identifying fish species and quantifying differences in traits of fish specimens from different populations within species; 3. Using extracted morphological traits data in "morphological barcoding" experiments focused on distinguishing images of fish specimens representing various fish taxonomic groups; 4. Verifying data and project output quality and accuracy; 5. Supporting the TUBRI coding team by a. assisting with software design where biological expertise is needed, b. making sure the software is properly documented, c. providing input during the coding process so that outputs are scientifically sound and publishable; 6. Attending project-related workshops, training programs, and meetings; 7. Keeping abreast of the latest literature relevant to the project; 8. Openly sharing findings with project collaborators; 9. Work collaboratively with Imageomics ML experts to explore develop new deep-learning methods; 10.Present analysis results at conferences and publish findings in scientific journals. BiotaPhy Hi everyone, Do you want to learn how to use occurrence data and available software to address questions in ecology and evolutionary biology but haven’t had a chance to take a course and are overwhelmed by the options for self-teaching? Would you like to incorporate this sort of research into your classes but don’t have time to create the materials and examples? If either of these applies, then join the BiotaPhy Project for an upcoming series of 10 webinars designed to take you from biological question to data acquisition and cleaning to analysis and interpretation! BiotaPhy is a collaboration among iDigBio, the Open Tree of Life, and Lifemapper projects and personnel. We have converted our popular summer workshop into a webinar series; see below for topics.
