Digitisation Data Lead / Consultant

We are seeking project support (a Data Lead or Data Consultant) to help develop and deploy our IT infrastructure for the Danish Natural History specimen digitization program (DaSSCo). This can be in the form of an official collaboration, consultancy or direct employment on a part-time or full-time basis of limited duration (at least initially). We are also open to solutions which blend off-site working and face-to-face meetings. Our main priority is finding someone who has the skills we need and can integrate easily into the existing team. Our initial needs are focused on: * Implementation of the data architecture needed for the DaSSCo digitization program * Implementation of middleware which stores image metadata and controls access to images * Designing and facilitating implementation of a specimen data refinery * Recommendations on and help to implement solutions for associating Persistent Identifiers with digital data * Documentation of all processes and decisions * Liaison and effective communication with the project team and other stakeholders The aim of DaSSCo is to digitize all natural history specimens in Denmark through a co-ordinated effort. The first 5 years of this long-term program are being financed by the Danish Ministry of Higher Education and Science, where the focus is to set up the infrastructure and workflows and to start mass digitization efforts. The program officially started on 1st September 2021 and we will be commencing digitization itself at the start of 2023. As the program is already underway, we are looking for the Data Lead or Data Consultant to start as soon as possible. You should have experience with software development and programming, preferably in Python, and you should be a proficient Linux / Unix users, preferably with experience with administration of such systems. In this talk, Dr. Littletree will discuss a conceptual framework that centers on the concept of relationality, a framework that can be used to understand Indigenous systems of knowledge in the LIS context. Littletree’s work contributes to the body of research that documents what Indigenous librarians, archivists, and technologists are doing to make spaces for Indigenous perspectives at the practical, conceptual, and theoretical levels. Understanding Indigenous systems of knowledge as an intellectual construct may inform better practices for knowledge organization for Indigenous cultural heritage. She is Eastern Shoshone and is a citizen of the Navajo Nation (Diné). A member of the research group known as iNative and part of the Native North American Indigenous Knowledge (NNAIK) initiative at the UW iSchool, her research interests lie at the intersections of Indigenous systems of knowledge and librarianship. Littletree is an elected-member of the IFLA Indigenous Matters Standing Committee and sits on several national and international advisory boards focused on Indigenous librarianship. She is a past president of the American Indian Library Association (AILA), and she was program manager of the Knowledge River Program at the University of Arizona where she focused on recruiting and retaining Native American and Latino MLIS students.

This year the DC-2022 conference expands its themes to the whole spectrum of innovation in metadata design, implementation & best practices, with a special focus on challenges and opportunities in the data-intensive and diverse world. Two years into the pandemic, the changes and rising needs for information justice and equity prompted the metadata community to reexamine how the metadata community address the biases and prejudice existed in the metadata tools and practices. Creating just, equitable representation of data and information resources and entities plays a significant role in promoting diversity and inclusion. Since the late 1990s, the Dublin Core™ conference has been a major venue for discussions on where innovation opportunities for metadata might lie and where existing good practices may be consolidated. The conferences have drawn participants not only from universities, research institutions and LAMs (libraries, archives, and museums), but also from corporations and government agencies. This webinar is scheduled for February 10, 2022, 16:00 UTCC and is free (but registration is required). ** About the webinar* Natural history collections constitute an important and complex knowledge infrastructure. The heterogeneous data in these collections include specimens, genomes, field notes, ecological monitoring data, and more -- all of which have huge potential for reuse in biodiversity, medicine, climate science, agriculture, and many other domains. However, facilitating this integrative reuse requires first maintaining the fragile infrastructures used to store and share these data, and second, novel approaches to migrating data from legacy (and often analog) formats into datasets that are more fit-for-use. In this webinar, Dr. Thomer will discuss findings from two projects tackling natural history data curation: one focusing on the maintenance and migration of natural history databases, and another on the digitization and mobilization of historical data. The webinar will be of interest to those working with similar collections, as well as those interested in the maintenance of knowledge organization, knowledge infrastructures and the integrative reuse of scientific data. This webinar is hosted by the DCMI Education Committee and will be moderated by Dr. Karen Wickett. ** About the speaker* Dr. Andrea Thomer is an Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan School of Information. She conducts interdisciplinary research on scientific data curation and on the maintenance and evolution of knowledge infrastructures. The Natural History Museum of Denmark is currently advertising for a: * Technical Team Leader / Digitisation Lab Manager, and a * Data Manager with IT background to be part of our Digital Collections Team working on the DaSSCo programme. DaSSCo aims to digitise all of Denmark's natural history collections and make them publicly available.
