Biodiversity is an outstanding domain that deals with heterogeneous datasets and concepts generated from a large number of disciplines in order to build a coherent picture of the extend of life on earth. The presence of such a myriad of data resources makes integrative biodiversity increasingly important in the life sciences research. However, it is severely strangled by the way data and information are made available. The Semantic Web approach enhances data exchange, discovery, and integration by providing common formats to achieve a formalized conceptual environment. This workshop aims to bring together computer scientists and biologists, working on Semantic Web approaches for biodiversity and related areas such as agriculture or agro-ecology. The goal is to exchange experiences, build a state of the art of realizations and challenges and reuse and adapt solutions that have been proposed in other domains. The workshop focuses on presenting challenging issues and solutions for the design of high quality biodiversity information systems based on Semantic Web techniques. Planned outages of GBIF.org / TDWG.org

Dear all, Our apologies in advance, but we expect disruptions in both GBIF and TDWG services next week, Thursday and Friday, 22-23 June 2017. Partial outages may occur while we relocate the servers for GBIF's and TDWG's systems to a new data centre within the University of Copenhagen. During this move, we anticipate that GBIF.org, demo.GBIF.org and the GBIF API will continue to operate on temporary servers, though user account creation, dataset registration and dataset crawling will all be temporarily suspended. The TDWG website and all TDWG mailing lists are likely to remain offline throughout the outage. We apologize for any inconvenience and will strive to reduce the disruption and its duration as much as possible. Best wishes, Tim

Call for Tender: TDWG Website Development

Call for Tender: Website Development TDWG seek a contract with a motivated and experienced web developer to revise the TDWG.org website. TDWG needs a website to communicate and support its outputs and activities. One that 1) provides a clear overview of what TDWG does, 2) welcomes new members, and 3) can be easily maintained by its volunteer membership. None of this is provided effectively by the current website at www.tdwg.org, which contains over 300 (outdated) pages and relies on a complex and undocumented set of tools to maintain it. As result of which is a lot of fragility and the majority of the membership unable to contribute to the website in fear of breaking things. Following a review by the TDWG Infrastructure Committee we envisage a new, simplified system built using a static site generator for the main components of the site and a sensible adoption of tools to manage membership and the annual conference registration. The TDWG organization depends heavily on GitHub services, which we anticipate will serve as a good repository and editing environment for content pages authored in Markdown. We seek a developer to work with us on a contracted basis to undertake this development and migration. The phases of this process we envisage and the scope are documented in the *TDWG Website Roadmap* <http://www.tdwg.org/fileadmin/tdwg/TDWG_Website_Roadmap.pdf> [PDF]. We invite parties to submit expressions of interest to secretariat(a)tdwg.org before June 12th 2017. In doing so, please briefly document 1) your vision for the TDWG site, 2) the process you would propose and 3) provide details of your rates and availability. TDWG recognize that the complete scope of this work is not fully specified and will adjust the priorities within the budget available. A good working relationship with the contractor is therefore necessary and knowledge of the existing TDWG processes will be highly recognized in selecting the successful candidate. Contract size - *€18,000.00* (excluding VAT if applicable) Contract administration and oversightAdministration The contract will be administered by the Global Biodiversity Information Facility Secretariat (GBIFS) or the newly founded TDWG legal entity, subject to agreement with the selected contractor. Monitoring responsibility The TDWG Infrastructure Functional Subcommittee (FS) will be responsible for overseeing the progression of work and will report back to the TDWG executive committee. The TDWG Infrastructure FS would also be responsible for the timely provision of content material to the contractor. Payment mode Contract payments will be made by the contract administrator directly to the contractor pending approval by the TDWG executive committee of the satisfactory progression of work. The Linked Open Data cloud is a rapidly growing collection of publicly accessible resources, which can be adopted and reused to enrich both internal enterprise projects and public-facing information systems. The webinar will use the Linked Canvas application as its primary use-case. Linked Canvas is an application designed by Synaptica for the cultural heritage community. It enables high-resolution images of artworks and artifacts to be catalogued and subject indexed using Linked Data. The talk will demonstrate how property fields and relational predicates can be adopted from open data ontologies and metadata schemes, such as DCMI, SKOS, IIIF and the Web Annotation Model. Selections of properties and predicates can then be recombined to create Knowledge Organization Systems (KOS) customized for business applications. The demonstration will also illustrate how very-large-scale subject taxonomies and name authority files, such as the Library of Congress Name Authority File, DBpedia, and the Getty Linked Open Data Vocabularies collection, can be used for content enrichment and indexing. There will be a brief discussion of the general principles of graph databases, RDF triple stores, and the SPARQL query language. This technical segment will discuss the pros and cons of accessing remote server endpoints versus cached copies of external Linked Data resources, as well as the challenge of providing high-performance full text search against graph databases. The webinar will conclude by providing a demonstration of Linked Canvas to illustrate various end-user experiences that can be created with Linked Data technology: faceted search across data collections; pinch and zoom navigation inside images; the exploration of concepts and ideas associated with specific points of interest; the discovery of conceptually related images; and the creation of guided tours with embedded audio-visual commentary. *ABOUT THE PRESENTER:* *Dave Clarke* is co-founder and CEO of the Synaptica® group of companies, providers of enterprise software solutions for knowledge organization and discovery. He served on the authoring committee responsible for the 2005 version of the US national standard for controlled vocabularies, ANSI/NISO Z39.19. Dave leads research and development at Synaptica, where is developing an extensive range of software solutions for ontology management, image management, Linked Data management, and text analytics. With a MAP, each property is defined as an RDF vocabulary term with the definition of domain, range, and cardinality. According to the DCMI document "Interoperability Levels for Dublin Core Metadata", a MAP is a construct that enhances semantic interoperability. Therefore, when a community of practice agrees to follow a MAP's set of rules for publishing data as Linked Open Data, it makes it possible for such data published the LOD cloud to be processed automatically by software agents. A MAP is therefore a construct of great importance and the existence of a method for its development is essential to give MAP developers a common ground on which to work. The absence of such a method leads to a non-systematic set of MAP development activities that might result in MAPs with less quality. This Webinar will present Me4MAP, a method for the development of metadata application profiles. Me4MAP was defined in the context of a PhD and is still now being tested and refined. It is a method that is approached through a software engineering perspective. With Me4MAP, we do not propose a universal solution; rather, our intention is to establish a starting point for the study and design of methods for the development of MAPs. *ABOUT THE PRESENTER:* Mariana Curado Malta is an Associate Professor at Polythecnic of Oporto, Portugal and a researcher in CEOS.PP, Portugal. Currently, she is on leave in the Laboratorio de Inovación en Humanidades Digitales in the Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia in Madrid, Spain. Her research work is framed in a project (POSTDATA), financed by a European Research Council Starting Grant that aims to publish poetry data (and related data) as Linked Open Data. In POSTDATA she is responsible for the semantic modelling. Her research interests are related to methods for the development of metadata application profiles and the quality of MAPs in particular and metadata in general. She is the co-author of Me4MAP, a method for the development of metadata application profiles. Mariana Curado Malta has a PhD in Technologies and Information Systems from University of Minho, Portugal. She is the author of several research papers, book chapters, and recently co-edited the book “Developing metadata application profiles” published by IGI Global.
