Final update for the Digital Data in Biodiversity Research Conference

This is the final update prior to the *30 April early registration/abstract deadline* for the *Digital Data in Biodiversity Research* conference, to be held at UC Berkeley, 4-6 June 2018. Those desiring to take advantage of the economy housing option or submit an abstract for a poster, oral presentation, or discussion session must register by end of day Eastern time on the early registration deadline. Others may register as late as 15 May, though we *may close registration even earlier if we reach capacity*. *NEW WEDNESDAY FIELD TRIP*: Cal Academy is offering space for 20 people to do tours in two groups of 10 each. Tours will involve two scientific collections and an aquarium tour for each group, which will take about 2 hours, after which participants will be invited to explore the public floor including catching a planetarium show. If you have already registered and want to take advantage of this opportunity, please email me (gnelson(a)bio.fsu.edu) to indicate your interest and I’ll put you on the list. Those who have not registered can select this option on the registration form. First come, first served. Transportation to Cal Academy is not provided. If you want to participate in the *Wednesday field trip to Pt. Reyes National Seashore* (https://www.idigbio.org/wiki/index.php/Digital_Data_in_Biodiversity_Researc…), there are still a few spaces. You must register for the field trip ($25.00 fee) when you register for the conference. Part of what makes specimens so invaluable is the fact that they represent life in a certain form at a particular place and time. However, there are some complications when it comes to reporting and comparing collection dates and the ages or chronology of ‘modern’ specimens to those from paleontological or zooarchaeological relevant time frames. This Darwin Core Hour aims to take a deeper look at some of these complexities, to begin community discussions of how these important data should be portrayed in Darwin Core, and to provide a starting point for these discussions by introducing the Chronometric extension for Darwin Core that is currently under development. DCMI 2018 conference, Porto, September 10-13, 2018

Whether you are engaged in cutting-edge innovation, working to refine good practice, or teaching (or learning!) about metadata technologies, then the Dublin Core annual conference and workshop is the place to be. This year we will be hosted by the University of Porto in Portugal (September 10th - 13th, 2018), and our conference will be co-located with the TPDL 2018 conference (delegates will be able to register just once and have full access to both conferences). We already have some great sessions lined up, and a superb line-up of keynote speakers [^1]. The DCMI community includes a broad range of people, including academics, developers and technicians and practitioners of all kinds. TDWG2018 symposium on integrating data & phylogenies

Dear Colleague, We are calling for abstracts for a symposium titled “Linking biodiversity data through phylogenetic knowledge” at the Biodiversity Information Standards (TDWG) conference, August 25 - September 2, 2018, Dunedin, New Zealand. This meeting will be held jointly for the first time with the annual meeting of the Society for the Preservation of Natural History Collections (SPNHC). I would also appreciate it if you could spread the words by forwarding this email to your colleagues or students. Thanks! We will be able to provide a limited amount of *funding* to offset expenses where needed and on a competitive basis. DwC Hour: Making DNA and tissue collections available

Welcome to our first Darwin Core Hour of 2018! Making DNA and tissue collections available by using the GGBN extensions with IPT Date: Wednesday, 21 February 2018 Time: 5 PM CET, 11 AM EST, 1 PM Buenos Aires Where: https://idigbio.adobeconnect.com/room In this Darwin Core hour we will give a brief overview about the Global Genome Biodiversity Network (GGBN) and the GGBN Data Standard. This standard covers facts about DNA and tissue samples and complements Darwin Core and ABCD. It can be used with both and is not a stand-alone solution. GGBN is dedicated to DNA and tissue collections and makes use of the GBIF infrastructure to reference to the underlying specimens. We will demonstrate how to use the GGBN extensions with IPT in detail and how it finally looks like in the GGBN Data Portal. Today more than 400,000 DNA and tissue samples and 200,000 voucher specimens are available through the GGBN portal. Specify has now included an automated export for the GGBN extensions in its latest release. But many others partners also have started to implement the standard into their systems (e.g. Arctos) and more than 1.7 million new sample records will be made available in 2018.
