Our colleague and dear friend William Ulate has passed away

Dear TDWG colleagues and friends, You may have already heard the news. If not, the TDWG Executive and I are deeply saddened to announce that long term TDWG Treasurer, valued colleague, and dear friend, William Ulate, has passed away. He was afflicted by a rapid onset, brief illness, and his passing is sudden and unexpected. Chuck Miller from the Missouri Botanical Gardens was able to visit him in hospital and also gave us the news that William’s daughter was able to fly up from Costa Rica to be with him. With the TDWG conference only a few weeks away, we have started to make arrangements for William’s life to be celebrated during the opening session of the conference. The 2023 event will focus on data generation and mobilization with special emphasis on presentations, hands-on workshops, and lively discussions that provide training, resource sharing, and workforce enhancement. Major topics will include digitization strategies for ensuring data quality, digitizing in support of the digital extended specimen, lightning talks by digitization practitioners from around the globe, updates from U.S. National Science Foundation-funded digitization projects, image and data storage, digitization workflows, and expanding biodiversity information through the digitization of trait data. BioDigiCon will address essential content for those working at the interface of physical specimens and the generation of digital data from those specimens. Open Call for Lightning Presentations from near and far to address innovative protocols, resources, tools, strategies, etc. TCN Representatives: Presentations will not be required this year, but they are encouraged. After three years of pandemic conditions and three all-virtual conferences, many of us look forward to meeting again in person, so we are planning for an in-person meeting in early November, in Daegu, Korea. DCMI 2023, the twenty-first International Conference on Dublin Core and Metadata Applications, will embrace the whole spectrum of innovation in metadata design, implementation, and best practices, with a special focus on challenges and opportunities in a data-intensive world. Today's data-driven, data-dependent, and data-intensive environment requires metadata that is findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR), which is the underpinning of data and knowledge ecosystems. Metadata has never been more crucial than today. Trending fields related to digital transformation such as connected data catalogs, collaboration and remote work, artificial intelligence and machine learning, digital history and ethics, and open science depend on high-quality metadata. The parallel growth of data and metadata challenges the metadata community to rethink its research and practices in order to stay ahead of emerging trends. DCMI 2023 is a venue for discussing "innovative practice" - new solutions to practical problems. It draws participants from universities, research institutions, and LAMs (libraries, archives, museums), as well as corporations, non-profit organizations, and government agencies. The organizers of DCMI 2023 seek inspirational submissions on innovative ideas, practices, and solutions that are built on theoretical models, empirical evidence, and ethical and just foundations of metadata. In-person participation is encouraged with the option of virtual. * Less than 1500 words plus references * All presenters at the student forum will receive free registration for the conference * All presenters attending the in-person conference will be automatically eligible for the Student Forum Award competition. This in-person focus/discussion group during this year's Digital Data Conference will address conversations to date and broaden the input into the Action Center concept. Addressing Roadblocks and Envisioning Solutions of the Digital Extended Specimen Concept This two-hour workshop and discussion session will bring together biodiversity informatics and data experts from throughout our community to address some of the possibilities and challenges implementing the Digital Extended Specimen concept. This session will address solutions to date and additionally look to the community for input and discussion. Open discussion: the NEON Biorepository infrastructure model This discussion session is offered to complement the opportunity to visit the National Ecological Observatory Network, NEON Biorepository, in person during Digital Data 2023 at Arizona State University. The NEON project involves a structured, long-term plan to sample new, diverse, prioritized specimens across distributed sites of the North American subcontinent, process and store them a both intermediary peripheral facilities and a permanent centralized location, transform them into Darwin Core occurrences and published extended specimens, and actively make both samples and data available for loan to enable question-driven ecological and evolutionary research.
