Dear TDWG-member. I hereby like to draw your attention to our web-site www.taxonomica.com (ENTAX). For this moment this site is used in the Netherlands by the CIW (Dutch Commission for integrated water management) to register all freshwater and marine species within the Netherlands, and to provide each species with a unique TCN-code (Taxon Code Netherlands). Since this system is fully hierarchic, each taxon has a parent. Therefore it was very important for us to organize the higher taxonomic levels. Lately this action has been completed in ENTAX. Choices made for the classification of taxa in ENTAX (downto phylum level) are explained in a document. You can download this document here (<http://forums.taxonomica.com/EnTaxTree001.pdf>). The classification presented merely serves as a starting point open for discussion. TDWG Annual Meeting: Campinas, Brasil; Oct 18-22, 2002

TDWG List subscribers: The 2002 TDWG meeting will be held October 18-22, in Campinas, Brasil. Our host will be the Centro de Referência em Informação Ambiental (CRIA) [Reference Center on Environmental Information] -- Vanderlei Perez Canhos, President & Director. The TDWG meeting will be held (concurrently) with a Species 2000 meeting (Oct 19-20). In addition, each organization will host an all-day symposium (sequentially) on the following two days (Oct 21-22). Subgroups, working groups, and interest groups may meet (as necessary) from one to three days before the main meetings. Satellite events, such as training workshops or meetings of related organizations may be scheduled in the days following the symposia. (See an overview of the schedule, below.) The main TDWG meeting will consist of: - Contributed papers - Subgroup reports (progress and plans) - Business meeting - Discussion and planning of future activities The TDWG Symposium: The recently established Global Biodiversity Information Facility (http://www.gbif.org/) has already begun activities that will profoundly influence the acquisition, management, and dissemination of biodiversity information. GBIF-sponsored activities, in turn, will highlight the need for standards that will guide the work of potential data providers, integrators, and developers of analysis services. To ensure that TDWG's work supports and compliments GBIF activities, TDWG will hold a symposium dedicated to elaborating a framework for interoperability and identifying the (missing) standards that will be critical to building the infrastructure. The program is still to be determined, but is likely to include: reviews of GBIF activities and broader trends in information technology (e.g., XML technologies and web services), position papers, and discussion. This year's meeting promises to be informative, important to the development of TDWG, and fun(!). I hope to see you there. Information system development poistions for IPK Gatersleben

Wishing you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, yours, Helmut Knuepffer JOB ANNOUNCEMENT The Institute of Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research (IPK) at Gatersleben, Germany, is a public research institute with more than 450 employees, funded by the Federal State of Saxony-Anhalt and the German Federal Republic. In the frame of the fusion of the two present German Genebanks (Plant Germplasm Collections) in Gatersleben and Braunschweig, the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) will fund a project for the development of the Information System of the new Central German Genebank, most likely starting in February 2002, with a duration of four years. The Genebank Department of IPK Gatersleben is announcing two positions for scientific staff members - software & database developers (Informaticians/Bioinformaticians) (salary up to BAT-O Ib) (IPK job reference number 48/12/01) The tasks will include the development of the new information system of the Genebank in a Sun/Solaris environment under the database management system DB2 (IBM) under UNIX, including coordination tasks (cooperation with project partners and external service providers, and interaction with the "Plant Data Warehouse" component of the "Bioinformatics Centre Gatersleben-Halle", see http://www.ipk-gatersleben.de/de/department/molecular_genetics/expr_map/01-…). It is expected that the successful applicants have a university degree (corresponding the German Diplom) in the field of informatics or bioinformatics, or, in the case of excellent informatics knowledge and experience, in plant sciences or plant-breeding or related fields. Experience in the development of complex relational databases, good knowledge of PC- and UNIX-based database management systems, knowledge in the field of plant genetic resources, plant breeding or related fields are also a prerequisite. Good working knowledge of German (or the willingness to obtain this knowledge in a short period) and the ability to work in a multidisciplinary team are also desirable. Wishing you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, yours, Helmut Knuepffer The Bioinformatics Center (BIC-GH) is a joint initiative of the Institute of Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research (IPK) Gatersleben, the Institute of Plant Biochemistry (IPB) Halle, and the Martin-Luther-University (MLU) Halle-Wittenberg and includes further the Konrad-Zuse-Center Berlin and the Kelman GmbH, Berlin. It is funded for a five-year period by the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The BIC-GH has initiated a masters course of studies in bioinformatics at the MLU for graduate students from natural sciences. In addition, the center will establish research groups for which we seek Five Junior Research Group Leaders, Bioinformatics (BAT-O Ib to BAT-O I) with interests in the following fields: - Development of a plant data warehouse for genotypic, phenotypic, taxonomic and expression data of cultivated plants (IPK 44/11/01). use of GML for geographical data

I'm posting there as i haven't found any mailing-list for the geography subgroup. I would like to discuss the use of GML for geographical data in systematics databases. GML is (or will become soon) a standard for geographical data exchange/storage, so it would be really interesting to use it for our own needs. Moreover, it's really designed to be included in other data formats. However it is mostly coordinate-based, while most of our current data are not. We have relationships between locations/areas, such as 'collection x is located in city y, that is located in country z', but rarely latitude and longitude of a them. GML could eventually support strictly hierarchized data, such as points located inside an area, but not overlaping areas realtionships. POSITION #1 TITLE: Faculty Research Assistant POSITION DESCRIPTION: Available: position for a Faculty Research Assistant with the primary duties as a Taxonomic database specialist to work on the Oregon Flora Project. Primary goals of the Oregon Flora Project (www.oregonflora.org) are to produce an online identification manual, distribution atlas, and photograph gallery of Oregon vascular plants. Primary responsibilities include assistance with species occurrence and morphology database design and documentation; development of authority files and lookup tables; acquisition, evaluation and formatting of data from a wide variety of sources and data formats; and specimen identification.
