URGENT: Request for registration of interest - Informal KE Emu Users meeting CIRCULATION: TDWG membership only An informal meeting of current and prospective users of the commercial Collections Management System KE Emu has been proposed. The Taxonomic Databases Working Group does NOT promote, endorse or support the use of any particular commercial product but on that understanding we are willing to host such a meeting as it is apparent that several TDWG member institutions are using, or are evaluating, the product. If you are interested in participating in the meeting it is important that you send email without delay to Adrian Rissone (A.Rissone(a)nhm.ac.uk), with "TDWG KE EMu" in the subject line, stating the date and time that you intend to arrive at the TDWG meeting in Oeiras. TDWG 2003 Annual Meeting - Call for Papers

This is a call for papers and posters for the TDWG Annual Meeting to be held in October 2003 at the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciencia, Oeiras, Lisboa, Portugal. Please see the meeting web site for details: http://www.tdwg.org/2003meet/TDWG2003.htm Titles and abstracts (up to 200 words) should be submitted *as soon as possible* to the Programme Coordinator (Adrian Rissoné <A.Rissone(a)nhm.ac.uk>). Indicate whether you are willing to make your final contribution available on the TDWG website (for example, as a PowerPoint document). Presentations should not exceed 30 minutes. In previous years it has been necessary to reduce this time to 20 minutes so please design presentations to be shortened easily if required. Please try to make your contribution relevant to the primary themes of the meeting, which has special emphasis on Taxonomic Names, interoperability, and the provision of data via the Web. Papers or posters addressing collaboration and interoperability would be welcome, papers on "my cool website" or "the status of informatics at my institution" less so (unless directly addressing "lessons learned" and how to move forward). Phyloinformatics: new journal - call for papers - editors wanted - http://phyloinformatics.org Dear taxonomist, Phyloinformatics is a new, non-profit, international, peer reviewed, open access journal dedicated to publishing high quality papers on the use of informatics in taxonomy and phylogenetics. Taxonomist often need to manage fairly large amounts of data for which elegant solutions are needed. And the inference of phylogeny itself is impossible without the use of computers and optimized algorithms. To help this emerging field of taxonomy grow, we have started Phyloinformatics. Phyloinformatics is not a regular journal: it's only available online and it's open access. Phyloinformatics offers all published papers as a free PDF download, there are no subscription or login procedures for readers and no page charges for authors. But open access means more than just free: our authors remain the copyright holders of their work. Being an online journal has lots of advantages: papers can be published very fast and are available to anyone with a computer and internet connection. CALL FOR PAPERS Phyloinformatics is just starting now and we are looking for high quality manuscripts in one of the following two categories: - Papers Describing new research developments in computational taxonomy, for example: new evolutionary models, algorithms, software involving new methods, taxonomic databases, proposals for new file formats and network information services, and their impact on taxonomy. - Application Notes Short descriptions about new software or new algorithm implementations, databases and network services. The software or data should be available online as free- or donationware. We are planning to publish our first articles before the end of 2003. During the meeting, a shuttle bus will be arranged, but it is also possible to walk, or get a local train. OSIS platform update

I just updated the web site of OSIS, a software framework developped in my laboratory. This project aims to create a shared code base to build systematics application from a common trunk instead of reinventing the wheel constantly, as molecular biology community already do with biojava, bioperl, and similar projects. The only implementation available currently is in Perl, and the only use case is related to database management, but the project scope is wider. It is of course a free software project, so all comments, critics or contributions are welcomed.
