Simple reference search & discovery

Folks, Rod Page has a slick scientific reference parser at http://bioguid.info/references and has also made an XML- & JSON- (with optional callback) generating function with full references as input parameter. I won't describe the guts of the parser & how it works, but will instead leave that heavy lifting to Rod. You may read more about it here: http://tinyurl.com/ynw2q2. I made a simple gadget for web page developers/authors to take advantage of this superb service. All you have to do is insert one line in the page header to insert a JavaScript file, download a few small icons and make them available to the JavaScript (one minor edit in the script), and adjust the markup associated with your references as follows: This is one full reference This is another full reference .and the functions in the JavaScript insert search icons for each reference. Upon receiving a visitor's click, a reference is shuttled off to Rod's parser and, after a very brief moment, the search icon changes to a clickable icon depending on what was found in the DOI, handle, PDF world. Well, old reprints are being scanned (& hopefully being assigned DOIs) all over the place. As a web page author, it's a pain the neck to stay on top of this game and yet there a strong desire to make references on a page clickable such that visitors can immediately download the article(s). There are other solutions to this, but my goal was to make a tool that is very simple to implement & intuitively obvious for visitors. Caveats: 1) Only scientific articles in journals will return successful responses, but of course nothing in life is guaranteed 2) There are a ton of ways a full reference to an article can be written. Successful response from Rod's service depends on the structure of these references between the elements. TDWG 2007 REMINDER: deadline for Abstracts and Regular Registration fee

REMINDER in just over 24 hours (15 August 2007, 23:59 UTC) Registration fees increase AND Abstracts are due for TDWG 2007 TDWG 2007 will be held 16-22 September 2007 in Bratislava, Slovakia. I urge everyone interested in Biodiversity Informatics to see http://www.tdwg.org/conference2007/programme/schedule/ for the complete schedule of talks. I am particularly impressed by the strength (depth and breadth) of this year's schedule. If you have been contemplating joining or wondering how TDWG can serve taxonomists better, why not come and see what we are up to and raise your needs if they are not on the Biodiversity Informatics Standards horizon? While the schedule for talks is NEARLY full, there is still time to submit abstracts for posters and/or computer demonstrations. Bratislava is just across the Danube from Vienna and is a very attractive destination. Yet another call for presentations

Dear TDWG list members, here is another chair of a session need to attract presentations, "Where to from here: Evolving prior and emerging standards" at TDWG 2007 from 14:00 - 15:30 on Friday, 21 September. As the title suggests, the socpe of the seesion is rather open, i.e. upto your offer. It includes an extension of current TDWG standards, what not coverd by current TDWG standards but need to real use. It is not an exlusive list so if you have something that do not fit to other sessions the session could be your place. Details are same to other sessions; upto six 10-15 minutes talks, more posters and demonstrations. If you offer a presentation in the session, please contatct me. Call for presentations on LSIDs for the TDWG 2007 Conference

Dear TDWG mailing list subscribers, We will have a session titled "LSIDs: Gluing it together to meet users' needs" at the upcoming TDWG 2007 Annual Conference in Bratislava from 11h00 to 12h30 on Tuesday, 18 September. We would like to use this time to present relevant LSIDs/GUID work from our community. This is a general call for 10-15 minute presentations for this session. We would be interested in hearing about- - Examples of successful use of LSIDs and other identifiers in our community - Best practices and guidelines on issuing, management, and persistence of identifiers - Anything regarding LSIDs or GUIDs that will assist our community We are also interested in hearing about use cases and metadata for representing digital (or physical) objects. These use-cases, however, may be more appropriate in the ontologies and vocabularies session or on client needs. Please contact me as soon as possible if you are interested in presenting. The conference schedule (see [1] below) is extremely compact, so there is time for only 6 presentations. Alternatively, there is plenty of room for posters or computer demonstrations. If you intend to respond to this call please contact me before then ** What do biodiversity data managers and biodiversity data users need from organisations such as TDWG? How does that relate to the architecture that TDWG has been developing? We'd like to hear: 1) what is needed (and why) in terms of: - additional standards - architectural components - on-line services - tools to help integrate biodiversity, observational, ecological and conservation data 2) what has already achieved (or is being worked on), towards these aims, that we don't know about 3) how you can contribute The schedule for the 2007 Conference is very busy and we have space for only five or six verbal presentations. Call for presentations for the Commincation, education & outreach session

Dear all, There is a session at this year's TDWG Annual Conference devoted to "Communication, education & outreach" to take place on Friday 21st September between 0900 and 1030. The session will cover topics of particular relevance to TDWG, such as how biologists get the computer knowledge and skills that they require and, conversely, how computer scientists get the biological knowledge that they require to be able to contribute to the work that TDWG represents. New initiatives and technologies that allow taxonomists to communicate, collaborate and to get the attention and interest of students and others new to the field are of particular interest. If you are interested in making a 15-minute presentation during one of the remaining slots in this session, please contact me by email in the first instance at the address given below.
