Training for Scratchpads

Dear all, apologies for cross-posting. A training course in the use of Scratchpads (http://scratchpads.eu) will be available immediately after the EDIT general meeting in Carvoeiro this December. The course is aimed at those who manage sites on behalf of their community (site maintainers). Note also that there will be a workshop in this year's TDWG meeting in Montpellier (http://www.tdwg.org/conference2009 ) about the logistics of maintaining your own Scratchpad server. EDIT will be funding participation in the general meeting for those at EDIT member institutions through your local team leader and this can be extended for an additional night to cover the training course. The deadline for travel funding is 16th October. Course registration is open until 1st December. A message from the Chair of TDWG: Dear TDWG Members and Friends I know that I've been slack over the last few months. There has been a lot happening on the ALA and TDWG fronts that have been keeping me exceptionally busy, and time has run away. The TDWG 2009 Program and the TDWG 2009 Local Organizing Committees have been doing an excellent job in structuring the meeting. My thanks to both groups for the work they are going to ensure that this is the best TDWG meeting ever: an Olympian effort. Please note that Early Registration closes September 14 and abstract submission closes October 1. Abstracts are required for all oral presentations, posters and computer demonstrations. We will also accept 'Contributed Abstracts' as we did for the first time for TDWG 2008. If you haven't already done so, please register for TDWG 2009 at https://www.regonline.com/TDWG2009. If you have been approved for a presentation during a conference session, or wish to submit a 'Contributed Abstract', please follow the instructions at http://www.tdwg.org/conference2009/abstracts/. If you are not already a member of TDWG, please consider joining and supporting us (and being a member will also give you a discount on registration for TDWG 2009!). We really do need your support. There has been a range of happenings this year that are significant for TDWG. We are getting close to the ratification of NCD, Darwin Core, TAPIR and the LSID Applicability Statement. I'd like to see all of these as standards by TDWG 2009. The work of Neil Thomson, Wouter Addink, John Wieczorek, Gail Kampmeier, Renato De Giovanni, Piers Higgs, Kevin Richards and Ben Richardson to get us to this point has been exceptional. My thanks to each of you. Another significant event was e-Biosphere 2009 in London. This meeting provided a broad perspective on biodiversity informatics and identified TDWG as playing a significant role. Components of TDWG 2009 will attempt to progress issues raised in the e-Biosphere report. So, if you want to learn about biodiversity informatics in Agriculture, be a part of helping to share biodiversity data; learn about vocabularies, ontologies and LSIDs; listen to some wild (and not so wild) ideas; ask crazy (and not so crazy) questions of the gurus; figure out how to connect your data to the world; enjoy some exceptional food and wine, and of course, enjoy some excellent company and fascinating discussions, then join us in Montpellier. Developer Position available at GBIF

Developer Position available at GBIF The GBIF Secretariat is seeking a motivated and experienced software developer for a 15 month consultancy to work on the development of one of GBIFs key infrastructure components: the GBIF Metadata Catalogue. The GBIF Metadata Catalogue will play a key role in a greatly expanded GBIF network featuring numerous providers (publishers) and consumers of data where the key activities of inventory, discovery and access to data need to be well coordinated through provision of registries and metadata catalogues. A Metadata Implementation Framework Task Group is currently preparing a report with a set of recommendations based on the terms of reference provided by GBIF ( <http://www.gbif.org/News/NEWS1234799445> http://www.gbif.org/News/NEWS1234799445). The goal is to ensure that the GBIF network follows best practices in deployment of metadata systems and that the metadata requirements are in place to support the technical, social and policy framework for publication of primary biodiversity data that is being addressed by the separate, parallel-running GBIF Data Publishing Framework Task Group. The person appointed will be instrumental in delivering the metadata catalogue system for the GBIF network. Dear TDWG Members and Friends TDWG is now using a range of different social networking tools, including Twitter. You can follow the official TDWG account (tdwg) by going to http://twitter.com/tdwg and choose 'Follow' if you have a Twitter account. Alternatively, you can see who is talking about TDWG by searching for #tdwg (or go to http://search.twitter.com/search?q=%23tdwg). There is already an active group of TDWG members and friends using Twitter, who are tweeting about a variety of TDWG issues. Join Twitter and follow what is really happening in and about TDWG! I have also setup a TDWG group on LinkedIn (a more work-oriented network than Facebook). This informal group currently has 57 members and is used for discussion, seeking feedback and ideas. TDWG: Public Review of the Darwin Core 'standard'

TDWG is pleased to announce the commencement of the Public Review of Darwin Core - a standard for sharing biodiversity information. You will find the proposed standard is a living document with a history, an anchor in the Dublin Core, and mechanisms to grow and change. Since being officially put forward as a draft standard in February 2009, Darwin Core has undergone a peer review, a review by the TDWG Executive, and multiple revisions. Open Invitation: We invite all who may contribute and/or consume biodiversity information to examine this proposed standard during the Public Review period from 11th July through at least 10th August 2009. How to Participate: Visit the Darwin Core Progress site (http://code.google.com/p/darwincore/wiki/DarwinCoreProgress) for the latest background information on the process and critical links to content (http://rs.tdwg.org/dwc/index.htm) and participation. To discuss ideas with others or offer comments that are not targeted for action, please subscribe (http://lists.tdwg.org/mailman/listinfo/tdwg-content) and contribute to the tdwg-content mailing list (tdwg-content(at)lists.tdwg.org). Recommended actions or issues should be submitted to the Issue Tracker of the Darwin Core (http://code.google.com/p/darwincore/wiki/SubmittingIssues) so that they may be assigned, prioritized, and tracked. This Public Review process will be archived along with all other documentation in the TDWG Standards Track. TDWG 2009 in Montpellier (November 9-13) - registration now open

Dear TDWG Members and Friends (with apologies for CP) The conference web site (http://www.tdwg.org/conference2009) and online registration is now open for TDWG 2009 in Montpellier. TDWG 2009 will have a very different structure to recent meetings. There will be plenary sessions on the Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The three themes 'The e-Biosphere Roadmap' (Walter Berendsohn), 'Agricultural Biodiversity Informatics' (Elizabeth Arnaud) and 'Data Integration' (Roger Hyam)' will operate generally as parallel working group sessions on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday with introductions in the Monday plenary. The latest version of the Programme Committee's detailed programme can be found on the conference site. The current committee thinking about the working sessions (Tuesday-Thursday) can be found at http://wiki.tdwg.org/twiki/bin/view/Conferences/Tdwg2009). Comments and ideas can be added here. This year, we are aiming at significant advances in areas such as the TDWG ontology and LSID infrastructure. We also anticipate that Darwin Core, TAPIR and the LSID Applicability Statement will be TDWG standards before TDWG 2009. What's next? We warmly welcome the 'old hands' and new TDWG'ians.
