At the last TDWG meeting in Sweden, the *TDWG Data Quality Interest Group* was formally established with Antonio Saraiva and myself as co-conveners. We did not have a lot of time to meet in Sweden, but over 35 people have put their names down as being interested. We know that a lot of you were not able to attend the session n Data Quality because of parallel sessions or because you were not able to get to the TDWG meeting this year. We are looking for more people to work with us so that we can begin to make progress on this very important topic. I would thus encourage you to join the Google discussion group at http://community.gbif.org/pg/groups/21292/gbiftdwg-biodiversity-data-qualit… I would also suggest that you look at some of the talks on Data Quality given at the TDWG meeting - they can be found at https://mbgserv18.mobot.org/ocs/index.php/tdwg/2014/schedConf/presentations At the meeting we decided to set up three sub working groups; viz: . Framework for Communication . Tools, Services and Workflows . Use Case Library/Competency We did not give a lot of thought into the naming of these groups at the time, and that is one topic that needs further discussion. We also need to develop a charter and work plan for the next twelve months for each of these working groups. We also need to appoint a convenor for each working group so that the discussion can be kept rolling. If you are interested and prepared to do this, then please let Antonio or myself know. Call for Nomination of TDWG Executive Positions 2015 is now open !

Dear all Call for nomination for the TDWG 2015 Executive is now open. https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/7JP3HF6 Deadline October 29th 2014. We have designed a survey to collect nominations for positions on the 2015 TDWG Executive (http://www.tdwg.org/about-tdwg/executive/ <http://www.tdwg.org/about-tdwg/executive/%29.>). The elections will open during the TDWG 214 conference and remain open until after the conference to allow smooth remote voting of members not participating to the conference. The results of the elections will be announced to the members and on the website of TDWG. The new Executive will enter into function the 1st of January 2015. When nominating a person, you will be asked to: 1. Provide your name and contact information so we may contact you if needed. 2. Provide complete name, affiliation and contact information for the person you nominate. 3. State clearly for which position on the Executive you are nominating the person. You can only nominate a person for one position. 4. It is preferable that the person is aware of the nomination and willing to take on the position. 5. If available provide a short biography of the person or a link to an on line CV or profile. 6. Optionally you may also state why you think the person would be suitable for the position. NOTE THAT: 1. Self nominations are allowed. 2. If you wish to nominate more than one person, please start a new survey for each person. 3. Incomplete or inconsistent nominations will discarded. 4. Cynthia Sims Parr, Ph.D. Knowledge Services Division National Agricultural Library, ARS, USDA 301-504-9801 Cynthia.Parr(a)ars.usda.gov Postdoctoral Opportunity in Agricultural Data Curation at the College of Information Studies (iSchool), University of Maryland, College Park Maryland's iSchool seeks a postdoctoral fellow to work on the project "Establishing a Data Curation Program for Agricultural Information" at the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) National Agricultural Library (NAL). Depending on the candidate's background, expertise, and interests, several exciting research projects could be complementary to the role envisioned for this postdoctoral position. Potential research areas include (but are not limited to) metadata standards, data preservation and re-use, data curation, and digitization management. The postdoctoral fellow will also have access to the iSchool's recently established digital curation lab. College Park's close proximity to NAL and other large Federal institutions in the Washington, D.C. area offers easy access to many related data repositories. The postdoctoral fellow will receive a competitive salary, including benefits and support for conference and research travel. The duration of the postdoc is 2 years, with opportunity for renewal. Start date for the position can be as early as January 2015. Roles and Responsibilities: This postdoctoral fellowship is a research position, with an expectation of productive research activity that will result in journal publications or conference presentations. The primary responsibilities of the fellow will include participation in a research project that aims to understand the data curation needs and requirements of NAL and to develop strategies that guarantee the management and preservation of NAL's expansive collection of agricultural data for long-term use. NAL has recently established a Knowledge Services Division (KSD) to lead efforts in digital curation. The postdoctoral fellow shall work with an interdisciplinary team of faculty and graduate students at the iSchool to conduct research and implement policies that will help KSD further understand NAL's capacity for data curation and preservation. KSD staff is a mix of highly qualified and enthusiastic information professionals, researchers, and scientists. The postdoctoral fellow will have ample opportunity to interact with archives, digital preservation and digital curation researchers from the iSchool and its digital curation lab, and KSD personnel, as well as to collaborate actively as suits research interests. Qualifications: Candidates should have (or soon have) a Ph.D. in Information or Library Science, or another relevant field. He or she must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. The successful candidate will have strong research background, proven information and project management skills, demonstrated excellent communication skills through a record of publication and public presentation, and a strong interest in advancing digital preservation and data curation through education, engagement and collaboration. The successful candidate will have an understanding and demonstrated competency in the following areas: science data management, qualitative and quantitative research methods, digital preservation, trusted digital repository workflows, science metadata standards and inter-operability, and open science. Demonstrated record of the ability and desire to work in a multidisciplinary and collaborative environment is also desirable. Hi Dan, Thanks for your offer. As far as I recall, the TDWG executive decided at the last meeting to move onto a whole new platform and put contractor money aside to make it happen. I’m reluctant to point you at the tangled mess of the current system when I suspect it is to be replaced anyway. It really is a convoluted mess of Typo3 plugins, which try and keep a bunch of backend systems in sync and dues to bugs in there it does not work as expected. I really don’t think it is something you want to get into, but I sympathise that the TDWG site is broken and no-one is maintaining it… a simpler vanilla CMS solution that even requires more manual text editing etc. will be a far more manageable solution in my opinion. @TDWG Executive folks - is it still the intention to contract out and do a basic CMS site? If not, I’ll try and pull up the code but I’d need your approval to get him a DB dump as it holds user credentials / subscriptions etc. Please can you advise us? Anything we can do to help? Just quickly, I got a short statement of work and budget worked out with the potential contractor last winter, but let the project go cold. That was entirely my fault. I had a couple contacts with them through the rest of the year just to maintain contact, and then started to push in late August. Key people were on vacation then, and since I’ve been pushing sending emails and making phone calls trying to get the project started. But I’ve only gotten one response, they’re still interested, but they didn’t tell me when we could start. If anyone knows another Typo3 contractor, I’d be happy to engage with them instead. (The one I’ve been trying to engage is in SF… so I should go knock on their door instead of sending email and phoning.) As to Audubon Core (AC), a little clarification is needed. The only thing so far adopted is the AC data model, more precisely "The Audubon Core Multimedia Resources Metadata schema (“AC schema”, or simply “AC”) is a set of metadata vocabularies for describing biodiversity-related multimedia resources and collections. The specification is independent of how these vocabularies may be represented for machine use." [1] In particular, no artifacts akin to such things as the DwC normative document [2] have been submitted for approval, nor have artifacts akin to Simple Darwin Core [6] though some are under development (*, **). In appearance, the AC documents [1, 3 and 4] together are a bit like the most useful reference for DwC, namely [5]. But unlike [5], [3 and 4] are normative ([1] is not/). Those parts of AC are maintained in a MediaWiki, and would be relatively pointles to put in a public source code repository, perhaps except based on arguments of backup sustainability. In such a case, they would be of use only to AC maintainers, unless the repo happened to support MediaWiki.
