SPNHC 2025 abstract submission NOW OPEN

The abstract submission process is now open for SPNHC 2025, to be held May 27-31 in Lawrence, KS and hosted by the Biodiversity Institute, University of Kansas. More details about the meeting can be found here: https://spnhc2025.ku.edu/. We have had an overwhelming response to our call for symposia/sessions with a diverse array of subjects pertaining to natural history collections proposed. The full list can be viewed on the website here: https://spnhc2025.ku.edu/sessions. At this time, we invite you to submit abstracts for oral presentations (15 min.), lightning talks (5 min.), and poster presentations. Content may be presented in-person or pre-recorded. We are working on providing the technology to support remote participation for presenters. Abstract submission will once again be handled through the Oxford Abstracts (OA) platform. What you need to know * See the 2025 Submission Guidelines for OA Abstracts: https://spnhc2025.ku.edu/oa-abstract-submission-guidelines. We have reworked the main search to increase the performance and usability. You can now browse through 4.4 million GGBN records and 6.9 million material entities with facetting and sorting. In addition, the landing page provides full text search across all major resources (samples, members, wiki, document library) which will enable easier access to GGBN information. Our 114 members can now be explored in a dedicated search (https://www.ggbn.org/ggbn_portal/members) where you can find information about their collections in general. Collaborative effort The new portal serves as a powerful tool for molecular research and biodiversity biobanking by providing improved access to GGBN's unique features and resources (permit information, linked material entities, document library). SPNHC 2025 workshops and field trips + travel grant extension

Hi all We have added links to workshops and field trips to the SPNHC 2025 site. We have a number of great field trip options for attendees - https://spnhc2025.ku.edu/fieldtrips. These will all occur on the first day of the meeting, Tuesday, May 27, and will offer a variety of experiences in and around Lawrence for both the adventurous and the more relaxed. All field trips will be full-day events running 8:30 or 9:00 am to 3:00 or 4:00 pm giving attendees enough time to return, relax, take a shower, and make the ice-breaker event at 6:30 pm at the KU Union Ascher Plaza. Field trips will be an optional extra during registration and numbers will be limited so make sure to secure your spot when registration opens. Field trips will be assessed a fee to cover logistics, transport, and the fees of our great partner organizations. More details including timing, itineraries, and pricing will be posted soon and before registration opens. We have a great selection of workshop proposals for every taste - https://spnhc2025.ku.edu/workshops. Most are half-day workshops which will be run in morning (9:00 am to noon) or afternoon (2:00 pm to 5:00 pm) sessions. Workshops will take place on the last day of the conference, Saturday, May 31, so be sure to reserve hotels and flights accordingly to allow your participation. Workshops will be assessed a participant fee as part of registration to cover venue and logistics. A minimum number of participants will determine workshop viability. See below for more details. Registration will be opened within the next week or two as soon as we have more finality on our sponsor and vendor contributions. Additionally, the travel grant deadline has been extended to February 7. Although registration has not been finalized, for budgeting purposes we estimate that early-bird, student member registration will be in the range of $250-275. Greetings colleagues, If you've created innovative software, tools, services, or workflows supporting the management and use of natural history collections, DemoCamp is an ideal venue for you to share your work at SPNHC 2025. DemoCamp is based on a presentation format without any slideshow - you show off your technology only using a live demonstration. We encourage you to submit your abstracts for consideration before the March 10 deadline. The DemoCamp session description and abstract submission URL are provided below. Best, Katie Pearson Abstract Digital technology and data standards are increasingly critical components of natural history collections. Ongoing efforts to digitize natural history collections and link the resulting information to other resources is envisioned to eventually culminate in a comprehensive digital record of biodiversity preserved and represented in collections worldwide. This significant expansion of the reach of digital collections will further cement the important role of technology and standards in the management, analysis, and dissemination of natural history collections specimens and data. Since its debut at SPNHC 2009, DemoCamp has provided a venue for developers, biodiversity informaticians, digitization managers, and collection managers to convene and share innovative approaches for the use of technology to enhance the management and use of natural history collections. Presentations demonstrate the use of software, tools, services, and workflows that enhance capacity, use or develop global data standards, and extend the accessibility and quality of information. The format of DemoCamp dictates that presentations must be live demonstrations rather than descriptions of the technology and forbids the use of slideshows. Each presenter is allotted time for a live demo as well as questions from the audience. This format ensures that only functional technology is presented. SPNHC Annual Meeting Travel Grants Available Application Deadline: January 31, 2025, Close of Business (COB) Your Local Time The Society for the Preservation of Natural History Collections (SPNHC) is offering travel grants for the 2025 SPNHC Annual Meeting, https://spnhc2025.ku.edu/travel-grants. Applicants must be members of the Society or apply for membership before the application will be accepted. While any SPNHC member may apply, preference will be given to students (undergraduate or graduate) and emerging professionals, focused on the physical care, management, or preservation of natural history collections. Preference will also be given to applicants presenting at the conference. SPNHC members from the following countries are strongly encouraged to apply—Central and South America, Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe. Greetings Everyone, A new paper out as of yesterday: Workshop Report: *Supporting inclusive and sustainable collections-based research infrastructure for systematics (SISRIS).* Weeks Andrea, Collins Elizabeth, Majors Twanelle W, Murrell Zack E, Paul Deborah L, Sheik Matthew, Shorthouse David P, Zeringue-Krosnick Shawn (2024) in Research Ideas and Outcomes 10: e126532. https://doi.org/10.3897/rio.10.e126532 Natural history and science collections are as much about the people who create them as they are about the specimens. Documenting the contributions of collectors and identifiers both past and present: 1) advances collections-based research and 2) creates a more accurate and inclusive historical and future networked account (think metrics and impact) of biodiversity science. This report published 20 May describes our efforts to move the systematics community to action through a series of US national workshops and symposia. The goal was to spotlight the power of "people-data" that can be leveraged using next-generation biodiversity informatics tools.
