Programmer/Analyst Position, Tulane University Biodiversity Research Institute The Tulane University Biodiversity Research Institute (TUBRI) is seeking a Software Programmer/Analyst to assist with a number of ongoing biodiversity informatics development projects. Required qualifications for the position include: B.A. or B.S. degree in Biology, Computer Science, or related interdisciplinary areas; at three years of working experience in biodiversity informatics and/or software engineering; working knowledge of C# and Javascript programming languages; working knowledge of MS SQL Server; familiarity with JQuery & Openlayers frameworks/libraries; knowledge of Geographic Information Systems. Preference will be given to applicants with the following additional credentials and skills: M.A or M.S. in Biodiversity Informatics, Computer Science and/or related fields; C/C++, Python and/or PHP programming languages; PostGreSQL/PostGIS database; 3D imaging and data processing; familiarity with biodiversity collections data; general knowledge of taxonomic nomenclature, practices and standards; past participation in funded research projects involving biodiversity informatics (e.g., NSF-ABI, ADBC, CISE programs, GBIF, etc.). TUBRI is a research center of Tulane University (http://www.tubri.org/). TUBRI is located in Belle Chasse, LA, a suburb of New Orleans 10 miles south of Downtown New Orleans and 15 miles from Tulane’s main campus in Uptown New Orleans. Proposals will be peer-reviewed by the program committee. At least one presentation author needs to register for the workshop (this is a strict requirement). *Themes for the 16th NKOS workshop will be:* (1) KOS Alignment. KOS alignment or terminology mapping plays a vital role in NKOS for many years. This year we want to sort out the needs (use cases) of KOS alignments in the new environment of Linked Open Data. We plan to collect methodologies, best practices, guidelines and tools. This includes manual and automatic alignments. (2) KOS Linked Open Data. Recent years have seen an increasing trend to publication of KOS as Linked Data vocabularies. We need discussion of practical initiatives to link between congruent vocabularies and provide effective web services and APIs so that applications can build upon them. (3) Subject metadata for research data. With increasing recognition of the need to manage research data as part of universities research output, subject metadata represent particular challenges that need to be addressed from theoretical as well as practical perspectives. We plan to discuss existing issues, especially in terms of interoperability across disciplines as well as applications, and strive towards establishment of best practices and guidelines. *Further timely presentations/demonstrations will be selected from the following topics in the CfP:* (4) KOS-based recommender systems. The suggestion of the right meaningful concepts is a mission critical phase for searchers in modern DL. (5) Meaningful Concept Display and Meaningful Visualization of KOS. (6) Standards developments. (7) Evaluation of KOS-based systems – methods and practical experience. *KOS applications are a regular and important part of NKOS workshops. Example topics include:* (8) KOS in e-Research metadata contexts - intersection between research data, KOS, Semantic web. (9) Social tagging. What is the role of social tagging and informal knowledge structures versus established KOS? (How) can tagging be guided and informed by KOS? (10) Users interaction with KOS in the online environment. (11) KOS and learning. What is required to use KOS effectively to convey meaning, to assist users to express their information needs to assist in sense making and learning? (12) Multilingual and Interdisciplinary KOS applications and tools. (13) Specific domains, such as environmental, medical, new application contexts, etc. After the workshop, copies of both proposals and presentations will be made available on both the workshop website and the DC-2016 conference website. The *deadline for abstract submission is 6 September 2016.* Space for oral presentations is limited, so the program committee will use relevance, quality, and date of submission to make acceptance decisions. Early submissions may be given preference, and some authors may be asked to prepare posters instead of oral presentations. Some of these are open to outside contributions, while others are full. A daily-rate of $120/day will be available to those who cannot attend the full meeting (does not include membership).
