Dear Colleagues, On behalf of TDWG we are very sorry to inform you that Richard John Pankhurst passed away on Tuesday 26 March after fighting oesophageal cancer for many years. He was a very important contributer and friend of TDWG, as can be judged from his short CV from the BioCISE directory: Dr Richard Pankhurst began his career in computing in the computer section at CERN, Geneva in 1963, and moving back to Cambridge to work on Computer-Aided Design in 1966. In 1971 he moved to the Botany School, Cambridge to begin work on his PANKEY programs for identification and key construction. This was continued at the Botany department of the Natural History Museum from 1974 until 1991, where he was for many years curator of the British herbarium, and also worked on the Flora Meso-Americana. "Biological Identification", 1978, was the first textbook on computer methods in identification. A new version of this book was published by C.U.P in 1991. Also published in that year was the Flora of the Outer Hebrides. With over 50 publications of refereed papers and books in the fields of taxonomic computing he has made major contributions to these fields. Dr. Pankhurst has been very active recently in programming and managing botanical databases (Flora Europaea, BSBI database and PANDORA) and systems with images. He was appointed Principal Scientific Officer at the RGB Edinburgh in 1991. Dr. Pankhurst served on various committees of British and international organizations, among others. Botanical Society of the British Isles, Committee for Scotland and Database Committee. Botanical Society of Scotland, Council. Taxonomic Databases Working Group, convener of Descriptors Group. International Organisation for Plant Information, co-convener of Information Systems Committee, Checklist Committee. Dr. Pankhurst was the head of the Department of Taxonomic Computing at RGBE. After his official retirement, he compiled a large database of the Rose family. His work on recording the wild flowers of the Outer Hebrides took him frequently to these remote islands on behalf of the Botanical Society of the British Isles. His interest in Taraxacum (dandelions) was acknowledged when a species found only on St. Kilda was named *Taraxacum pankhurstianum*. Hi Dan, Thanks for your offer. As far as I recall, the TDWG executive decided at the last meeting to move onto a whole new platform and put contractor money aside to make it happen. I’m reluctant to point you at the tangled mess of the current system when I suspect it is to be replaced anyway. It really is a convoluted mess of Typo3 plugins, which try and keep a bunch of backend systems in sync and dues to bugs in there it does not work as expected. I really don’t think it is something you want to get into, but I sympathise that the TDWG site is broken and no-one is maintaining it… a simpler vanilla CMS solution that even requires more manual text editing etc. will be a far more manageable solution in my opinion. @TDWG Executive folks - is it still the intention to contract out and do a basic CMS site? If not, I’ll try and pull up the code but I’d need your approval to get him a DB dump as it holds user credentials / subscriptions etc. Please can you advise us? Anything we can do to help? Just quickly, I got a short statement of work and budget worked out with the potential contractor last winter, but let the project go cold. That was entirely my fault. I had a couple contacts with them through the rest of the year just to maintain contact, and then started to push in late August. Key people were on vacation then, and since I’ve been pushing sending emails and making phone calls trying to get the project started. But I’ve only gotten one response, they’re still interested, but they didn’t tell me when we could start. If anyone knows another Typo3 contractor, I’d be happy to engage with them instead. (The one I’ve been trying to engage is in SF… so I should go knock on their door instead of sending email and phoning.) Last I heard from Stan (last month) he had not made progress on the new website -- was still in the process of establishing the contract. As to Audubon Core (AC), a little clarification is needed. The only thing so far adopted is the AC data model, more precisely "The Audubon Core Multimedia Resources Metadata schema (“AC schema”, or simply “AC”) is a set of metadata vocabularies for describing biodiversity-related multimedia resources and collections. The specification is independent of how these vocabularies may be represented for machine use." [1] In particular, no artifacts akin to such things as the DwC normative document [2] have been submitted for approval, nor have artifacts akin to Simple Darwin Core [6] though some are under development (*, **). In appearance, the AC documents [1, 3 and 4] together are a bit like the most useful reference for DwC, namely [5]. But unlike [5], [3 and 4] are normative ([1] is not/). Those parts of AC are maintained in a MediaWiki, and would be relatively pointles to put in a public source code repository, perhaps except based on arguments of backup sustainability. In such a case, they would be of use only to AC maintainers, unless the repo happened to support MediaWiki. +1 for TDWG “resources” in github! Maybe even GitHub pages for most of the website. Over the years we have followed too many different guidelines and styles and never cleaned up much to bring them all into a standard format. I would bet all standards are in some versioning system somewhere. But I guess this is not true for the final zip archive. DwC is in Google code, TAPIR for example is in the SVN TDWG once provided: http://www.tdwg.org/dav/subgroups/tapir/1.0/docs/tdwg_tapir_specification_2… Originally we tried to establish RDDL pages under http://rs.tdwg.org/ , which was served from TDWGs internal SVN, for all subgroups and standards. But it really is unbelievable that it could even be possible that a standards organization could lose the only copy of a standard. I say put them on Github, too. Available handbooks and training materials focus on an audience with a computer science background. However, people with a non-technical education find it hard to understand what Linked Data can mean for them. This full-day, hands-on workshop will provide an overview of methods and case studies from the handbook "Linked Data for Libraries, Archives and Museums" (2014, ALA/Neal-Schuman). Using freely available tools and data, this workshop will teach you how to clean, reconcile, enrich, and publish your metadata. Participants will learn about concepts, methods, and tools that they can use on their own, or to teach others within their own institutions, to get more value from metadata. *Workshop Tutors:* *SETH VAN HOOLAND *is an Assistant Professor at the Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB), where he leads the Master in Information Science. After a career in the private sector for a digitization company, he obtained his PhD in information science at ULB in 2009. He recently taught a special course on linked data at the Information School of the University of Washington. He is also active as a consultant for both public and private organizations. *RUBEN VERBORGH* is a researcher in semantic hypermedia at Ghent University – iMinds, Belgium, where he obtained his PhD in computer science in 2014. He explores the connection between semantic web technologies and the web's architectural properties, with the ultimate goal of building more intelligent clients. Along the way, he has become fascinated by linked data, REST/hypermedia, web APIs and related technologies.
