This first phase of the transition focuses on the development of the ability to produce metadata as LOD communally, the enhancement of the BIBFRAME ontology to encompass the multiple resource formats that academic libraries must process, and the engagement of the broader academic library community to ensure a sustainable and extensible environment. As its name implies, LD4P is focused on the immediate needs of metadata production such as ontology coverage and workflow transition. The focus of LD4P is on the identification, evaluation and adaption of existing viable tools to immediate production needs. A related project, LD4L-Labs, focuses on solutions that can be implemented in production at research libraries within the next three to five years. Their efforts focus on the enhancement and development of existing or new linked data creation and editing tools, exploration of linked data relationships, analysis of the graph to directly improve discovery, BIBFRAME ontology development, piloting efforts in URI persistence, and metadata conversion tool development needed by LD4P and the broader library community. As part of LD4P, Stanford is leading the development of a Performed Music Ontology and is converting four key technical services production pathways from MARC-based to RDF-based in a project called the Tracer Bullets. In this panel, we will discuss our work on these projects, highlighting achievements and difficulties of current efforts, as well as plans for future work. On the Performed Music Ontology, we will discuss our work on extending BIBFRAME 2 with community input to better support description of music artifacts. With regards to the “Tracer Bullets”, we will go through the progress on our four designated end-to- end pathways: vendor-supplied copy-cataloging (Tracer Bullet 1); original cataloging (Tracer Bullet 2); deposit of a single item to the Digital Repository (Tracer Bullet 3); and ingestion of a collection into the Digital Repository (Tracer Bullet 4). We have examined each of these pathways, from acquisition to discovery. Based on that analysis, we are converting all key elements in those workflows to a process rooted in linked data, balanced with the current needs and resources of the systems interacting with those pathways. Our emphasis is on the completeness of the pathway, and we plan for the workflows themselves to be expanded in the future to account for additional complexities and fully leveraging the capabilities of the RDF data models once our initial pathway has been established. For these tracer bullet pathways, Stanford is developing parallel processing streams. Resources flowing through these pathways will be processed in the traditional way with MARC or MODS-based metadata. A parallel, linked data workflow will be created for LD4P and duplicative metadata created. This metadata currently feeds into a parallel discovery environment so that we mimic the entire processing workflow. The metadata can also be sent to various library vendors and programs so that they can begin to adjust their businesses to incorporate linked data. Although this solution requires duplicative effort, it will allow Stanford to experiment with an alternative pathway without being dependent on the results for discovery. It also has the benefit of testing the new pathway with actual library resources and staff so that a true measure of effort and cost to implement the new paradigm can be evaluated. LD4P has completed the first year of its two-year grant and has made substantial process on the Tracer Bullets. It will focus on high-throughput digitization, driven by the keen need to move the world's physical collections into the digital realm where they are safer from the ravages of time, can be used by larger numbers of scientists and the public, and can contribute in new ways to the study of biodiversity. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: * Digitization technologies for high-throughput 2D and 3D capture of collection objects * Instrumentation strategies and algorithms * Specimen handling, label information capture, OCR, crowd-sourced label transcription, 3D reconstruction * Digitization requirements, metadata, image and 3D fidelity, time and resource constraints, speed * Workflows for high-throughput digitization of natural history collections * Data management for large and perhaps distributed digital collections of such data * Interface requirements, issues, and solutions both for scientific research and for public outreach to extremely large virtual collections * Applications of the resulting data resource to potentially new science and approaches as evidenced by theoretical models, case studies, parallels with existing similar data resources There is a wealth of untapped potential captured in the animal and plant collections held by museums of natural history around the world. Novel discovery processes will be catalyzed by the existence of large, curated, inter-comparable digital collections of specimen data. However, it has been noted that current methods may not be able to digitize the existing backlog of an estimated ~1.5 billion specimens, distributed across 1000+ collections, in the next 30 years or more. Obtaining information on labels of 500 million entomological specimens is particularly challenging. It may even be impossible to keep up with the rate of expansion of these collections as new specimens are added. Despite successful ongoing efforts, more needs to be done in terms of technology development across the ingest pipeline in order to meet this daunting challenge. Therefore, it is important and timely that a workshop of practitioners continues to expand upon discussion of how to advance the technology of high-throughput specimen digitization and ingest to match the requirements of this complex but ultimately richly rewarding problem. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Authors are invited to submit unpublished, original work, using the IEEE 8.5 x 11 manuscript guidelines: double-column text using single-spaced 10-point font on 8.5 x 11 inch pages. The goal is to exchange experiences, build a state of the art of realizations and challenges and reuse and adapt solutions that have been proposed in other domains. Dear all, Our apologies in advance, but we expect disruptions in both GBIF and TDWG services next week, Thursday and Friday, 22-23 June 2017. Partial outages may occur while we relocate the servers for GBIF's and TDWG's systems to a new data centre within the University of Copenhagen. During this move, we anticipate that GBIF.org, demo.GBIF.org and the GBIF API will continue to operate on temporary servers, though user account creation, dataset registration and dataset crawling will all be temporarily suspended. The TDWG website and all TDWG mailing lists are likely to remain offline throughout the outage. Call for Tender: Website Development TDWG seek a contract with a motivated and experienced web developer to revise the TDWG.org website. TDWG needs a website to communicate and support its outputs and activities. One that 1) provides a clear overview of what TDWG does, 2) welcomes new members, and 3) can be easily maintained by its volunteer membership. None of this is provided effectively by the current website at www.tdwg.org, which contains over 300 (outdated) pages and relies on a complex and undocumented set of tools to maintain it. As result of which is a lot of fragility and the majority of the membership unable to contribute to the website in fear of breaking things. Following a review by the TDWG Infrastructure Committee we envisage a new, simplified system built using a static site generator for the main components of the site and a sensible adoption of tools to manage membership and the annual conference registration. The TDWG organization depends heavily on GitHub services, which we anticipate will serve as a good repository and editing environment for content pages authored in Markdown. We seek a developer to work with us on a contracted basis to undertake this development and migration. The phases of this process we envisage and the scope are documented in the *TDWG Website Roadmap* <http://www.tdwg.org/fileadmin/tdwg/TDWG_Website_Roadmap.pdf> [PDF]. We invite parties to submit expressions of interest to secretariat(a)tdwg.org before June 12th 2017. In doing so, please briefly document 1) your vision for the TDWG site, 2) the process you would propose and 3) provide details of your rates and availability. TDWG recognize that the complete scope of this work is not fully specified and will adjust the priorities within the budget available. A good working relationship with the contractor is therefore necessary and knowledge of the existing TDWG processes will be highly recognized in selecting the successful candidate. Contract size - *€18,000.00* (excluding VAT if applicable) Contract administration and oversightAdministration The contract will be administered by the Global Biodiversity Information Facility Secretariat (GBIFS) or the newly founded TDWG legal entity, subject to agreement with the selected contractor. Monitoring responsibility The TDWG Infrastructure Functional Subcommittee (FS) will be responsible for overseeing the progression of work and will report back to the TDWG executive committee. The TDWG Infrastructure FS would also be responsible for the timely provision of content material to the contractor. Payment mode Contract payments will be made by the contract administrator directly to the contractor pending approval by the TDWG executive committee of the satisfactory progression of work.
