Call for Proposals, SPNHC 2015: Collections and Zoonotic & Human Disease Research

Colleagues: Scientific Collections International (SciColl) is organizing a session at the upcoming SPNHC 2015 meeting on The Role of Collections in Zoonotic and Human Disease Research<http://scicoll.org/ed.html>. We invite researchers and collections managers who are using their collections for human and zoonotic disease research to submit an abstract. We are particularly eager to include presentations about collaborations across collections and disciplines, especially with public health, wildlife, livestock and veterinary sciences. SciColl recently hosted a workshop on this topic with 40 representatives from diverse collections and research perspectives. They agreed that greater cross-disciplinary access to samples and data would help in combatting infectious diseases. ICE 2016 - Call for Symposia due 2 March 2015

The upcoming XXV International Congress of Entomology will be held in Orlando, Florida, 25-30 September 2016* http://ice2016orlando.org/. Many in TDWG are entomologists (or know entomologists, or count them as friends), and this Congress is a chance for those of us working with biodiversity information standards to reach a wider group of entomologists from around the world and to share information and experiences. I am one of three conveners for Section 5: Biodiversity, Biogeography and Conservation Biology http://ice2016orlando.org/scientific-program/sections-conveners/. So far only two symposia have been submitted for this section, and the deadline is fast approaching (2 March 2015) http://ice2016orlando.org/call-for-symposia-for-the-2016-international-cong…. Nico Franz is soliciting potential speakers for a symposium he is organizing with Katja Seltmann http://taxonbytes.org/ice-2016-orlando-symposium-proposal-building-the-biod… under Section 5, and I’d would love to see additional TDWG-related symposia submitted. This is a wonderful opportunity to feature and involve colleagues from around the globe at this venue. Please consider submitting a proposal for a symposium by the deadline (or earlier!!). TDWG Data Quality Interest Group

At the last TDWG meeting in Sweden, the *TDWG Data Quality Interest Group* was formally established with Antonio Saraiva and myself as co-conveners. We did not have a lot of time to meet in Sweden, but over 35 people have put their names down as being interested. We know that a lot of you were not able to attend the session n Data Quality because of parallel sessions or because you were not able to get to the TDWG meeting this year. We are looking for more people to work with us so that we can begin to make progress on this very important topic. I would thus encourage you to join the Google discussion group at http://community.gbif.org/pg/groups/21292/gbiftdwg-biodiversity-data-qualit… I would also suggest that you look at some of the talks on Data Quality given at the TDWG meeting - they can be found at https://mbgserv18.mobot.org/ocs/index.php/tdwg/2014/schedConf/presentations At the meeting we decided to set up three sub working groups; viz: . Framework for Communication . Tools, Services and Workflows . Use Case Library/Competency We did not give a lot of thought into the naming of these groups at the time, and that is one topic that needs further discussion. We also need to develop a charter and work plan for the next twelve months for each of these working groups. We also need to appoint a convenor for each working group so that the discussion can be kept rolling. If you are interested and prepared to do this, then please let Antonio or myself know. Phil and Lorna will present the latest developments in LRMI implementation, drawing on an analysis of its use by a range of open educational resource repositories and aggregators, and will report on the potential of LRMI to enhance education search and discovery services.
