Metadata Innovation: Enabling Knowledge in a Data-Intensive World
------------------------------------------------------------
For more than two decades, the Dublin Core community has been a fertile
ground for researchers, educators, practitioners, and developers to
exchange and share ideas, knowledge, experience, and innovative projects on
metadata.
After three years of pandemic conditions and three all-virtual conferences,
many of us look forward to meeting again in person, so we are planning for
an in-person meeting in early November, in Daegu, Korea.
DCMI 2023, the twenty-first International Conference on Dublin Core and
Metadata Applications, will embrace the whole spectrum of innovation in
metadata design, implementation, and best practices, with a special focus
on challenges and opportunities in a data-intensive world.
Today's data-driven, data-dependent, and data-intensive environment
requires metadata that is findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable
(FAIR), which is the underpinning of data and knowledge ecosystems.
Metadata has never been more crucial than today. Trending fields related to
digital transformation such as connected data catalogs, collaboration and
remote work, artificial intelligence and machine learning, digital history
and ethics, and open science depend on high-quality metadata.
The parallel growth of data and metadata challenges the metadata community
to rethink its research and practices in order to stay ahead of emerging
trends.
DCMI 2023 is a venue for discussing "innovative practice" - new solutions
to practical problems. It draws participants from universities, research
institutions, and LAMs (libraries, archives, museums), as well as
corporations, non-profit organizations, and government agencies.
The organizers of DCMI 2023 seek inspirational submissions on innovative
ideas, practices, and solutions that are built on theoretical models,
empirical evidence, and ethical and just foundations of metadata.
Submissions in the form of papers (long and short), posters, panels,
tutorials, and student forums are welcome in the following broad categories
of metadata design, deployment, and best practices:
* Metadata principles, guidelines, and best practices
* Curation, governance, resilience, and sustainability
* Metadata quality and validation
* Metadata analytics
* Conceptual models and frameworks
* Entity modeling and management
* Metadata vocabularies
* Interoperability and harmonization
* Metadata automation, AI, and knowledge graphs
* Lessons learned from research and implementation
* Metadata and diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA)
* Metadata history and ethics
* Metadata for operational and research data
* Metadata in digital humanities, open science, and business communications

** Submission Guidelines

* At least one author of an accepted submission must be physically present
at the conference to present the work in person (*with an exception of the
student forum).
* Submissions must follow the guidelines for one of the categories
enumerated below.
* All submissions must be in English.
* All submissions must be made via the Submission System,

* Submissions must be a single Portable Document Format (PDF) along with
the document's source.
* The source file should be Open Office (.odf) Microsoft Word (.doc or

** Full Papers

Full papers either describe innovative work in detail or provide critical,
well-referenced overviews of key developments or good practices.
* 8-10 pages, single-spaced, plus references
** Short Papers
------------------------------------------------------------
Short papers are narrower in scope than full papers and may be either a
description of work in progress, or a project report that concisely
describes a specific model, application, or activity.
* 4-5 pages, single-spaced, plus references
** Posters
------------------------------------------------------------
Posters are for the presentation of projects, research under development,
or late-breaking results.
* 2-page abstract, single-spaced, plus references
** Panels
------------------------------------------------------------
Panel sessions are organized by experts in a specific area of metadata.
Each panel serves as a focused exchange regarding the latest research
and/or best practice in the area.
* 1-2 page abstract with panelists' bios of 100-150 words each
** Tutorials
------------------------------------------------------------
Tutorials introduce specific topics of current interest in metadata
practice, optionally including hands-on practice. Proposals for tutorials
must include:
* 2-3 page proposal including:
* Title of tutorial and topic to be covered (2-3 paragraphs)
* Target audience and expected learning outcomes
* Tutorial style: lecture, demonstration, hands-on practice, etc.
* Any prior knowledge required (e.g., RDF, programming languages)
* Whether participants must (or should) bring laptops or install software
beforehand
* Presenter bios (100-150 words each)
** Student Forum
------------------------------------------------------------
The student forum aims at providing an opportunity for master's and
doctoral students to share their experiences and exchange ideas of best
practices, research in progress, and findings in areas related to metadata
innovation.
* Student forum will be in a hybrid format. In-person participation is
encouraged with the option of virtual.
* Less than 1500 words plus references
* All presenters at the student forum will receive free registration for
the conference
* All presenters attending the in-person conference will be automatically
eligible for the Student Forum Award competition. The Student Forum
Committee will select the winner who will receive a $500 prize to cover the
travel costs

Dear all,
We would like to invite you to participate in GeoLifeCLEF 2023, a machine learning competition that aims at predicting plant species composition in space and time. The competition is designed to support biodiversity management and conservation and to improve species identification and inventory tools.
The primary objective is to predict the set of plant species present at a given location and time using Sentinel-2 satellite images and Landsat time-series, as well as other rasterized environmental data like land-cover, human footprint, bioclimatic, and soil variables. The challenge presents several difficulties, including multi-label learning from single positive labels, strong class imbalance, multi-modal learning, and large-scale data.
We provide a large-scale training set of approximately 5 million plant occurrences in Europe (single-label data) belonging to 10,000 different species, thus covering a large proportion of the European flora. Unlike in previous years, in which occurrence data was also used for evaluation, we provide presence-absence data, thus multi-label, for 5,000 validation and 20,000 test plots.
The competition will be hosted by Kaggle and a summary of the results will be presented at the FGVC workshop at CVPR 2023 in Vancouver and at ImageCLEF 2023 in Thessaloniki.

exception of the student forum).
