Thanks for keeping the ball rolling, Teresa.

A couple notes about the controlled vocabulary. What's in there now was really just to get us started and to show people what information we need to have for each concept in the controlled vocabulary in order for it to be transformed into an "official" TDWG controlled vocabulary.

I looked at the list in the Google sheet. It is a lot more granular that I was supposing the values would be, but I guess there's nothing wrong with that if that's what we want. I would, however, ask that we consider potential overlap with the vocabulary already nearing completion and ratification by the Views Controlled Vocabularies Task Group. One of those vocabularies is to specify parts of organisms that are the subject of imaging, but as a practical matter, it's just a vocabulary of parts and could be used for any purpose. You can see the existing list at https://github.com/tdwg/ac/blob/master/views/code/subjectPart/subjectPart_cv.csv and a list of part controlled values organized by organism groups here: https://github.com/tdwg/ac/blob/master/views/code/part_collections.md

If you compare these values, you will see that many of them overlap with what's in the Google sheet. The Views TG purposefully did not go too granular, but chose to try to include only values that multiple users would be likely to photograph. We are in the midst of user testing right now, so should have a pretty good idea of which values work and which ones don't.

Subject: [dwc-material-sample] MaterialSample Task Group Homework
Greetings All!

We have had some really productive meetings! I think we have pretty much completed work on the following:

MaterialSample<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fgithub.com%2Ftdwg%2Fmaterial-sample%2Fblob%2Fmain%2Fprimary_deliverable%2FMaterialSample.md&data=05%7C01%7Csteve.baskauf%40vanderbilt.edu%7C2a941b6c60784e34e88708da23b7b98c%7Cba5a7f39e3be4ab3b45067fa80faecad%7C0%7C0%7C637861570190063709%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=yhSn7Q4G8dzho8iOAZGR3l%2F6w%2FGU52HPBc3xxOrO2Dw%3D&reserved=0>
materialSampleID<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fgithub.com%2Ftdwg%2Fmaterial-sample%2Fblob%2Fmain%2Fprimary_deliverable%2FmaterialSampleID.md&data=05%7C01%7Csteve.baskauf%40vanderbilt.edu%7C2a941b6c60784e34e88708da23b7b98c%7Cba5a7f39e3be4ab3b45067fa80faecad%7C0%7C0%7C637861570190063709%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=6P67GuvGNC%2F2qsRq1J%2BKDK7ix4zIvx4VERfDFTL3hvg%3D&reserved=0>

If anyone thinks anything in either of those working revisions needs a change, please comment in the appropriate Github issue.

Thanks to Steve Baskaufs, we have a start on a controlled vocabulary for materialSampleType<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fgithub.com%2Ftdwg%2Fmaterial-sample%2Fissues%2F24&data=05%7C01%7Csteve.baskauf%40vanderbilt.edu%7C2a941b6c60784e34e88708da23b7b98c%7Cba5a7f39e3be4ab3b45067fa80faecad%7C0%7C0%7C637861570190063709%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=ikqEwj9ZOje7zfSkZGqlCDdW4E8sKdQGhZyZot%2Fr1G4%3D&reserved=0>! Discussion yesterday led us to see the need for thinking beyond the currently used "GBIF basisOfRecord" terms. Abby suggested that we take a step back and start by creating a list of terms we think we might find or want to place in materialSampleType. So, I have started a Google Sheet<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdocs.google.com%2Fspreadsheets%2Fd%2F1Q2Bj9uhCD0HWEgm_hGe3CeMleMIFYMzYqWXgtgblYOU%2Fedit%3Fusp%3Dsharing&data=05%7C01%7Csteve.baskauf%40vanderbilt.edu%7C2a941b6c60784e34e88708da23b7b98c%7Cba5a7f39e3be4ab3b45067fa80faecad%7C0%7C0%7C637861570190219974%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=FJiz211dCS8zBQl%2FYPAVYjdG%2BT77mkyvMJyx6yFlMVo%3D&reserved=0> and I would like everyone to think about what they might place in this vocabulary. Just add your terms to the bottom of "suggested vocabulary". We can then deduplicate the list and start categorizing to see if we can build a more broad and useful vocabulary. In addition, I think it would be helpful for each of us to think about what we expect from the vocabulary for this term.

I am going to be sending invitations to some future working hours. Please come if you are available!

Adios,

Teresa J. Mayfield-Meyer
