JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

The Institute of Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research (IPK) at 
Gatersleben, Germany, is a public research institute with more than 450 
employees, funded by the Federal State of Saxony-Anhalt and the German 
Federal Republic.

In the frame of the fusion of the two present German Genebanks (Plant 
Germplasm Collections) in Gatersleben and Braunschweig, the German Ministry 
of Education and Research (BMBF) will fund a project for the development of 
the Information System of the new Central German Genebank, most likely 
starting in February 2002, with a duration of four years.

The Genebank Department of IPK Gatersleben is announcing

two positions for scientific staff members - software & database developers 
(Informaticians/Bioinformaticians) (salary up to BAT-O Ib)

The tasks will include the development of the new information system of the 
Genebank in a Sun/Solaris environment under the database management system 
DB2 (IBM) under UNIX, including coordination tasks (cooperation with 
project partners and external service providers, and interaction with the 
"Plant Data Warehouse" component of the "Bioinformatics Centre 
Gatersleben-Halle", see

It is expected that the successful applicants have a university degree 
(corresponding the German Diplom) in the field of informatics or 
bioinformatics, or, in the case of excellent informatics knowledge and 
experience, in plant sciences or plant-breeding or related fields. 
Experience in the development of complex relational databases, good 
knowledge of PC- and UNIX-based database management systems, knowledge in 
the field of plant genetic resources, plant breeding or related fields are 
also a prerequisite. Good working knowledge of German (or the willingness 
to obtain this knowledge in a short period) and the ability to work in a 
multidisciplinary team are also desirable.
