Subject: [TDWG-MIDS] Outcome of TDWG MIDS Task Group meeting - 2 June 2022

Dear all

We would like to share the outcomes of the meeting yesterday. We had an amibitious agenda and managed to get through nearly everything, with a lot of discussion and some key decisions.

The key outcomes are listed below. We have been updating the GitHub issues (https://github.com/tdwg/mids/issues<https://eur01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fgithub.com%2Ftdwg%2Fmids%2Fissues&data=05%7C01%7Cehaston%40rbge.org.uk%7C706cf2e45d1045042c9008da453bc991%7Cbb63bb00175e46b7b7b3bc74158e4fd4%7C0%7C0%7C637898420917142621%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=NPsj4d4VJQIB9kBR7XT4AezhEQa1AmAmN9j2BiEjOgw%3D&reserved=0>). We have also created a Googledoc to pull the MIDS levels together in an easier collaborative document. This document should be aligned with the GitHub issues. You can find the Googledoc here (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1gB_1tadm2qAwC3RFxzr6IJYaBMRjENoqdjWa1C24Qzw/edit#heading=h.g278b2yy9qsw<https://eur01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fdocs.google.com%2Fdocument%2Fd%2F1gB_1tadm2qAwC3RFxzr6IJYaBMRjENoqdjWa1C24Qzw%2Fedit%23heading%3Dh.g278b2yy9qsw&data=05%7C01%7Cehaston%40rbge.org.uk%7C706cf2e45d1045042c9008da453bc991%7Cbb63bb00175e46b7b7b3bc74158e4fd4%7C0%7C0%7C637898420917298682%7CUnknown%7CTWFpbGZsb3d8eyJWIjoiMC4wLjAwMDAiLCJQIjoiV2luMzIiLCJBTiI6Ik1haWwiLCJXVCI6Mn0%3D%7C3000%7C%7C%7C&sdata=bX4HWh5bZLO8v%2BFMj2B680iybIpOwlrGkpd0mG%2BS0N0%3D&reserved=0>). Please feel free to comment either in the document or in the relevant GitHub issues. We will be tracking both.

Key Outcomes

  1. Institution to be renamed Organization in line with Schema.org and to include recommendations on use of a human readable institutionCode and a globally unique persitent InstitutionID.

  1. SpecimenType to be used for a high level object delimiter/descriptor which would map broadly to BasisOfRecord and MaterialSampleType.

  1. ObjectType to be used for a lower level object descriptor which would map broadly to Preparations and KindOfUnit.

  1. License to be used for CC license framework.

  1. MediaType to be used for presence of an image, video or audio file.

  1. Agreement on MIDS-0 with a reduced number of elements: PhysicalSpecimenID and Organization (was Institution). Modified to be moved into MIDS-1 onwards.

  1. To drop the use of MIDS-1i and to bring MediaType directly into the MIDS levels at MIDS-2 onwards, allowing for exceptions for certain ObjectTypes.

I hope that everyone sees these decisions as workable so that we can more more rapidly forwards now with the MIDS specification. Cat and I will be working on an updated draft of the specification in a Googledoc which we will share shortly to make it eaiser for everyone to collaborate on it. When we have a final draft we will upload that to the GitHub repo.

Thank you all for your continued participation and engagement. We look forward to further discussion on the elements of MIDS-2 and MIDS-3 at the next meeting. We will also be discussing the process of finalising, ratifying and publishing the specification.

With best wishes

Elspeth and Cat
