Its glorious advantage is that its mnemonic and pronunciation are "mermaid". mrmd is far more evocative than dwc ("dwick" too close to "dweeb", or worse), ncd (sounds like somebody stole something), or sdd (which we continually have to explain is not meant to be a homonym for the acronym of Sexually Transmitted Disease).
