Hopefully the review will go smoothly and any comments that arise will prove useful. Announcement: The members of the Darwin Core Maintenance Group is happy to announce the opening of a minimum 30-day period for public review for a set of proposed new terms that are meant to embody the Humboldt Extension for ecological inventories coming out of research and discussions in the Humboldt Extension Task Group <https://www.tdwg.org/community/osr/humboldt-extension/>, ably led by convener Yanina Sica over the past three years. Please refer to the documentation we have provided on the review process and the maintenance of the Darwin Core standard in general at https://github.com/tdwg /dwc/wiki/Darwin-Core-Maintenance-Frequently-Asked-Questions. The relevant issues for commentary on terms are listed in the following milestone: https://github.com/tdwg/hc/milestone/1. Any other comments not related to the individual terms can be added by creating a new issue <https://github.com/tdwg/hc/issues/new?milestone=Public+Review+Humboldt+Extension+Task+Group+proposals> . Your comments are welcome and important for the evolution of the Darwin Core standard and its extensions. Thank you, The Humboldt Extension Task Group The Darwin Core Maintenance Team
Congratulations everyone. I’ll merge the pull request John made for the DwC-A extension schema later today for testing in the IPT. Hi Tim, To date we do not have scripts to build any of the controlled vocabularies. We could do so for the tightly controlled vocabularies that will not vary from the Darwin Core recommendations, perhaps as part of the "streamline update process <https://github.com/tdwg/dwc/milestone/15>" milestone. If that seems reasonable, would you be willing to add an issue there? And yes, in the meantime if you could make the controlled vocabulary for rs.gbif.org, that would be great. Just a FYI, there are JSON and CSV representations of the English and translated ratified controlled vocabularies at https://tdwg.github.io/rs.tdwg.org/translations/ The English CSV files are generated as part of the scripted process for populating the server that handles redirects and delivery of the machine-readable RDF representations. So they are always there and updated automatically. The translation CSV files were constructed manually. Many were done at that translation workshop that we had at TDWG a couple of years ago. The subjectPart and subjectOrientation CVs were translated prior to adoption by the task group. The JSON files are generated by a Python script from the above-mentioned CSVs for each CV. But they don’t contain any information more than the CSVs and have to be generated by running the script as a separate step. I would like us to encourage the creators of new vocabularies to provide translations at the time of ratification if possible, at least for the most widespread languages (i.e. Spanish, French, etc.). But that’s contingent on having someone who can actually do the translations… Steve -- Steven J. I mentioned at our meeting yesterday that the Executive Committee is interested in working to support task groups in getting out the word about their outputs. I’m going to share a paragraph that our chair (Ely Wallis) sent following the completion of the MaterialEntity terms ratification: The Executive did discuss one aspect of the ratification, which is how best to communicate the changes made this year to Darwin Core. We are aware that there are many users of Darwin Core in the community who may never participate in a public review discussion, or even open a GitHub issue. However, the changes being proposed, discussed and implemented will still affect them. We are keen to ensure that we communicate widely. Our Outreach and Communications subcommittee will be very happy to help with blog posts, social media, organising a webinar etc. I know that there are some next steps to go with implementing the changes so please let us know when and how we can help. As we move through the public review and are thinking about next steps, let’s consider how we can make use of this offer for help. Steve -- Steven J. Hi all, Thank you all for putting so much effort into this! This is just a short email to confirm that I am aware of the Humboldt Extension public review being open. I hope to find the time to go through all the terms in bulk and to provide a consolidated review. Cheers, Carlos On Tue, Sep 5, 2023 at 5:48 PM Zachary Kachian <zkachian@fieldmuseum.org> wrote:
