Hello,
TDWG lists as one of its prior standard the "Floristic regions of the world”: http://www.tdwg.org/standards/104/
Unfortunately we do not give any information about it at all. It seems to me that the work of Takhtajan, A. 1986 is the actual endorsed standard. Can someone verfiy this?
Takhtajan, A. 1986. Floristic regions of the world, pp. vii-xiii. University of California Press http://www.isbnsearch.org/isbn/0520040279 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phytochorion#Takhtajan.27s_floristic_regionaliz...
Thanks, Markus
Markus, The TDWG standard is Richard Brummit's publication, published by the Hunt Institute, which is more recent than Takhtajan's:
Plant Taxonomic Database Standards No. 2. World Geographical Scheme for Recording Plant Distributions, ed. 2. R. K. Brummitt with assistance from F. Pando, S. Hollis, N. A. Brummitt and others. 2001. xv, 137 pp.; 17 maps. ISBN 0-913196-72-X.
There are several companion pieces to Brummitt's publication: PDF http://www.nhm.ac.uk/hosted_sites/tdwg/TDWG_geo2.pdf Comma delimited and Access files: http://www.nhm.ac.uk/hosted_sites/tdwg/geography_ed2.zip ArcView shape files: http://www.kew.org/gis/tdwg/index.html
As I announced at the TDWG meeting, I'm organizing a Task Group to update the TDWG World Geographical Scheme for ratification as a current, versus prior, standard.
Chuck

Thanks a lot, Dr Miller! I agree with maps in Brummit's book. Especially with a map of the former USSR (page 11 Map 4). But Siberia is too large and seems to be splitted at least along longitude near Baikal Lake - my plant parasitic nematodes tell me about such splitting . - Alex -----Original Message----- From: tdwg-content-bounces@lists.tdwg.org [mailto:tdwg-content-bounces@lists.tdwg.org] On Behalf Of Chuck Miller Sent: Thursday, November 06, 2014 7:01 PM To: Markus Döring; TDWG Content Mailing List Subject: Re: [tdwg-content] Floristic regions of the world

Thanks Chuck,
I was wondering about that too. TDWG actually lists 2 geographic standards:
1) "World Geographical Scheme for Recording Plant Distributions" http://www.tdwg.org/standards/109/ published in 1992. I assume this is the first version of Brummit?
But then there is also
2) "Floristic Regions of the World" http://www.tdwg.org/standards/104/ published in 1986 (matches Takhtajan) with no further information.
So my guess was that both are prior standards endorsed by TDWG, is that true?

Looking at an old copy of the TDWG website, or a copy from archive.org, it looks like standard 104 does indeed refer to Takhtajan, A. 1986.

Thanks Simon, very good find! I will use those references to update the information about the prior TDWG standards.
