The Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) Secretariat is
seeking a motivated individual to join our small team of software
developers working at our offices in Copenhagen, Denmark.</p>
<p>GBIF is a multilateral initiative designed to facilitate access to
and sharing of data relating to the world's biodiversity via a global
network of institutions and organisations. The Secretariat has designed
and operates a web portal (<a href="http://data.gbif.org/">http://data.gbif.org/</a>)
that facilitates access to these data. </p>
<p>The Secretariat informatics team is responsible for:</p>
<ul>
<li>Maintenance and continuing development of the web portal in
response to user needs</li>
<li>Developing and supporting multiple tools and standards allowing
data providers to connect their data to the network</li>
<li>General IT development support to optimise the operations of the
Secretariat</li>
</ul>
<p>The GBIF Secretariat is seeking a software developer to augment this
team. The individual should:</p>
<ul>
<li>Have significant experience (at least 3 years) developing web
applications using Java technologies, particularly Tomcat, Hibernate,
Spring and Velocity</li>
<li>Have significant experience (at least 3 years) in the use of XML
technologies, particularly XML schema, XPath and XSLT</li>
<li>Have experience in developing solutions using very large
databases, particularly using MySQL</li>
<li>Be self-motivated and able to contribute constructively to a
small team</li>
<li>Be comfortable working in a fluid, changing environment</li>
</ul>
<p>Familiarity with the following areas will also be beneficial:</p>
<ul>
<li>The standards and protocols developed by the Taxonomic Databases
Working Group</li>
<li>The development of GIS solutions, particularly based on open
standards</li>
<li>The development of semantic web applications using RDF and OWL</li>
<li>Authentication frameworks, particularly using LDAP</li>
<li>Any of the following additional programming languages: PHP,
Python, Perl</li>
<li>The world of biodiversity information, including taxonomy,
collection management, conservation science, etc.</li>
</ul>
<p>This is an exciting opportunity to work on a major international
project using open source tools and standards and to play a part in
increasing our understanding and management of the natural world.</p>
<p>The post is available for a period of 3-5 years starting in January
2008 or as soon as possible thereafter.</p>
